Double-Walled Ewer in the Form of a Rooster
Late 12th-early 13th century; Persian, Seljuk Dynasty; Ceramic; height 27 cm (6 3/4 in.); Founders Society Purchase with funds from the Founders Junior Council, Henry Ford II Fund, Benson and Edith Ford Fund and J. Lawrence Buell, Jr., Fund; 1989.34
This rare double-shelled ewer imitates in ceramic the Seljuk metalwork technique of openwork decoration, a masterpiece in the annals of pottery production.
A pierced outer shell representing deer, sphinxes, and human-headed birds covers a solid inner shell designed to hold the liquid contents. Inscriptions and willow leaves encircle the lower body and neck, above which rises a rooster's head with an open crest to receive liquid and a pierced beak for pouring. The rooster, perhaps identified here as the Simurgh (a magical being able to protect against evil) in this case possibly was intended to guard the owner of the ewer from poison. LINK
folk arts - art gallery in Prison

FOLK ARTS are crafted of materials indigenous to the place from which they spring.
IN PRISON - where resources are slim to none, inmates create with soap, cigarette wrappers, toilet paper, pebbles, toothpicks, pop cans, white bread, and much more!
Toilet paper sculpture done by Keith Dwy. Prison toilet paper is the coarse cheap kind, malleable when wet, hard and durable when dried. One toilet paper artist, paroled to a half-way house, discovered that the relatively luxurious toilet paper available on the streets was too weak for his sculptures. He contacted an aquaintance on the prison staff to get the name of the institution’s supplier. LINK

The Stairs of Love

Fifty years ago, a 19-year-old Chinese man named Liu fell in love with an older woman, a 29-year-old widow named Xu.
At the time, it was unacceptable for a man to marry an older woman, so the couple eloped and lived in a cave in a mountain.
It was a grueling trip to go up and down the mountain, so for the next fifty years, Liu carved over 6,000 steps by hand so his wife could walk down the mountain more easily!
A half century later in 2001, a group of adventures were exploring the forest, they surprisingly found the elderly couple and the over 6,000 stairs of hand carved ladder.
“My parents loved each other so much, they have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and never been apart a single day.” Liu MingSheng, one of their seven children said, “He hand carved more than 6,000 steps over the years for my mother’s convenience, although she doesn’t go down the mountain that much.”

Colored Chicks Got Dye Injection While in Eggs

I’ve always thought that 1) buying baby chicks - cute as they are - for little children’s transitory enjoyment on Easter is kind of cruel and 2) colored chicks get to be that way because they are sprayed with dye after they are hatched.
I don’t know if you agree with me or not on point number one, but I guess I was wrong on the second part: chicks can actually get colored by injection of dyes a couple of hours before hatching time!
The scanned article above came from a 1947 Mechanix Illustrated, but it seems like the technique is alive and well today. LINK

ELVIS PRESLEY IF EVERY DAY WAS LIKE CHRISTMAS
LYRICS:(Words & music by Red West)
I hear the bells
Saying Christmas is near
They ring out to tell the world
That this is the season of cheer
I hear a choir
Singing sweetly somewhere
And a glow fills my heart
I'm at peace with the world
As the sound of their singing fills the air
Oh why can't every day be like Christmas
Why can't that feeling go on endlessly
For if everyday could be just like Christmas
What a wonderful world this would be
I hear a child
Telling Santa what to bring
And the smile upon his tiny face
Is worth more to me than anything
Oh why can't every day be like Christmas
Why can't that feeling go on endlessly
For if everyday could be just like Christmas
What a wonderful world this would be.
Yes Christmas, a time of the year when we SHOULD all be Happy.

"Ice Worms"

The ice worm is a creature most people think is a myth - if they've heard of it at all. But ice worms really exist. The first ice worm species were discovered in 1887 in Alaska, on the Muir Glacier. These glacier ice worms can also be found on glaciers in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia.
When ice worms are exposed to temperatures as low as 5°C, their membranes melt and the worm itself liquifies. Ice worms are several centimeters long, and can be black, blue, or white in color. Ice worms come to the surface of the glaciers in the evening and morning. LINK

Science Tattoos "HeartFlowerNerve.jpg"

"It's a tattoo, as you'll see in the picture, of a heart. Growing from the heart is a seeding dandelion, from which are flowing, instead of seeds, nerve cells. The dandelion serves as a great way to tie the two together, and also adds a good element of motion to the tattoo. The stem of the dandelion is, essentially, the superior vena cava, and the roots are the pulmonary arteries (going off to the lungs). The dandelion leaves are all growing out of the aortic arch. The angle of the heart makes some confused as to what they're seeing. The heart is rotated so that the majority of the image is the right atrium (purple) and ventricle (red). A small portion of the left ventricle and atrium are seen on the rightmost part of the image.
On the blog, The Loom, carl asked whether scientists wear many tattoos of their science. The answer was yes. He posted all the tattoos people sent him here on Flickr. If you've got one you'd like to share, send it (along with some explanation) to: blog at carl zimmer dot com. Via: Flickr

Human Statue of Liberty

"On a stifling July day in 1918, 18,000 officers and soldiers posed as Lady Liberty on the parade [drill] grounds at Camp Dodge." [This area was west of Baker St. and is currently the area around building S34 and to the west.] "According to a July 3, 1986, story in the Fort Dodge Messenger, many men fainted-they were dressed in woolen uniforms-as the temperature neared 105 degrees Farenheit. The photo, taken from the top of a specially constructed tower by a Chicago photography studio, Mole & Thomas, was intended to help promote the sale of war bonds.
Many examples of Mole's patriotic photographs in true perspective still exist. Pay close attention to the way spatial depth and perspective is defied. As in the Statue of Liberty there are twice as many men in the flame of the torch as in the rest of the design. Dalí: Painting & Film

Salvador Dalí's interest in film that went far beyond his collaborations with Buñuel, like the famed "Un Chien Andalou." Dalí created wonderful storyboards and set designs for quite a few unrealized films, including a collaboration with the Marx Brothers! Here's a quote from a 1937 letter Dalí wrote to surrealist André Breton: "I’m in Hollywood, where I’ve made contact with the three American Surrealists, Harpo Marx, Disney and Cecil B. DeMille." Dalí created the dream sequence for Alfred Hitchock's Spellbound (1945). Apparently, a phantasmagoric ballroom scene was shot for this sequence but ended up on the cutting room floor. Dalí's artwork and notes for this part of the dream are quite remarkable. It's sad that the footage was lost.

ARTS + FEATURES, "Surreal thing"
Dali Cafe // 11 Spassky Pereulok. Tel: 572 6203 // www.dalicafe.spb.ru // Open 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. // Dinner for two 690 rubles ($29).
All the dishes at this swanky new cafй hidden on a scruffy side street off Sennaya Ploshchad purportedly share their names with the titles of works by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali after whom, of course, the cafй is named.
This throws up some strange imagery, as you would expect: grilled marinated veal (380 rubles, $15.50) is called “Flesh on Stones”; fillet of flounder with pesto (420 rubles, $17) is called “The Endless Enigma”; and bouillon with quail’s eggs and herbs (90 rubles, $3.60) is called “Atavistic Vestiges After the Rain.”
Perhaps in an effort to avoid the obvious, the literate people behind Dali Cafй do not have a dish named after Dali’s most famous work, “The Persistence of Memory” (1931), easily recognizable for its motif of melting watches. Melting watches are also absent from the sumptuous interior of Dali Cafй, which occupies a mid-sized second floor room overlooking the street, and smaller room at the back.
A great deal of attention has been paid to the decoration of the cafй. There is a reference to Dali’s “Mae West Lips Sofa” in the vast crimson velvet banquettes at the far end of the room, while there are smartly upholstered Empire-style chairs at the other tables. The tables are huge, black and shiny, like grand pianos, while blood-red swag curtains are tied back with golden tasselled cords. There’s more than a hint of camp in this red, gold, and black scheme, which extends to walls that, in the front room, have been covered with an elaborate marble paint effect suggesting ruby crystals flecked with gold. In the back room, hidden by a heavy curtain, the same idea is repeated, this time with dark, brooding malachite and ebony tones. In this “dark room” there is a recently installed triptych by the up-and-coming young painter Ira Drozd. The large paintings show impressionistic scenes from what appears to be a gay pride parade. As it happens, Dali Cafй is listed on gay web sites and describes itself as “gay friendly.”
The dishes are not as flamboyantly constructed as their names might suggest, and the idea of “surreal food” is perhaps a step too far. But there is wit in the presentation. A duck and pasta dish called “Gala’s Eyes” — a reference to Dali’s Russian-born muse and wife Yelena Ivanovna Dyakonova, known in later life as Gala — comes as two mounds of white pasta (eyeballs?), meat in red sauce on one and cream sauce on the other (surreal irises?) and an olive on top (pupils?). The dish stares at you until you stab it with a fork. Thank goodness they don’t supply you with a razor. It would be “Un chien andalou” all over again.
The menu’s origins are difficult to pin down — French, Italian and Asian elements jostle for attention, with some Russian soups thrown in for good measure. Ukha (Russian fish soup for130 rubles, $5.30) is renamed “Battle in the Clouds” while borshch is transformed into “The King’s Heart” (100 rubles, $4). There is a satisfying range of salads with adventurous combinations of cold meats, salad vegetables and fruits like melon and strawberry with no mayonnaise in sight (from 120 rubles to 490 rubles, $4.90 to $20), and an unusual selection of “non-alcoholic cocktails.” These are actually a group of frappes, milkshakes, cordials and fruits that should be popular in summer and with after-club crowds (Dali Cafй is open until 5 a.m.).

"25 of The World’s Most Interesting Animals"

Named after the dragons of Chinese mythology, Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) resemble a piece of drifting seaweed as they float in the seaweed-filled water. The Leafy seadragon, with green, orange and gold hues along its body, is covered with leaf-like appendages, making it remarkably camouflaged. Only the fluttering of tiny fins or the moving of an independently swiveling eye, reveals its presence.
Like the seahorse, the male seadragon carries as many as 150-200 eggs. After being deposited by the female, the eggs are carried in the honeycomb-shaped area (known as the brood patch) under the male’s tail for approximately eight weeks. Seadragons have no teeth or stomach and feed exclusively on mysidopsis shrimp. Known as “Australian seahorses” in Australia, they are found in calm, cold water that is approximately 50-54° F (10-12° C). Leafy seadragons have been protected by the South Australian government since 1982. LINK
