Australia's monster motorbike from hell

Proving once again that it is always easier to tear things apart than it is to build them is the Australian monster, as seen above. The builder, Ray Baumann, says that "this is a way of taking a bit more care," if you can believe that. You see, his previous job was as a stunt driver. He claims that it is much safer riding this monster bike crushing cars than it was to jump them on a much smaller machine. Weighing in at 13 tons and standing about 10 feet tall, the monster doesn't appear to have any suspension travel at all. The frame appears to be an upside-down ladder design, with wheels and tires from Caterpillar. What does it take to move this maxi-machine? A Detroit Diesel engine hooked to a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission. LINK

Historically Strange

Historically Strange:

When Germany conquered Tanganyika (a region of eastern Africa) in 1898, Chief Mkwawa, the leader of the Wahehe tribe, was killed. The Germans then sent Mkwawa’s head to Germany, where it was displayed in a museum in Bremen.
During World War I, the British kicked the Germans out of Africa, aided by the Wahehe. H.A. Byatt, the British administrator now overseeing the former German-controlled area, lobbied the British government for the return of Mkwawa’s skull in appreciation for the Wahehes’ War effort. The return of the skull was even stipulated in the Treaty of Versailles, the 1919 agreement outlining terms of German’s surrender. But Germany denied taking Mkwawa’s head and the British government didn’t push the issue, accepting the German explanation that the skull was lost.
In 1953 Sir Edward Twining, the British governor of Tanganyika, vowed to track down the skull … and found it in the Bremen Museum among a collection of dozens of skulls taken in the 1890s. Mkwawa’s skull was finally returned to the Wahehe in July 1954 and now resides in a museum there. LINK

The Panopticons are a set of four futuristic sculptures set in the rural settings of Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale districts of East Lancashire, England. The powers-that-be commissioned the sculptures as gateway pieces and a symbol of the renaissance of the area.

Fantastic Ice Cathedral Grotto Under Norway’s Glacier

Melting ice has created a fantastic "ice cathedral" in a grotto under the Nigard Glacier, one of Norway’s major glaciers:
The ice grotto is "fantastic," with "extremely blue" colors and large icicles hanging from its ceiling. "But it’s changing from day to day."
The grotto is believed to have been created by rising temperatures. "It’s the running water under the ice that has made the ice over it melt." LINK

Fantastic Mr Frost

Sometimes nature's palette is richer than that of any artist, as these beautiful and surreal images show.
These delicate fronds and whorls are not decorative etchings, nor have they anything to do with vegetation, despite their biological appearance.
n fact they are nothing more than frozen water — ice crystals which formed on Mail reader Stuart Dent's cars on two frosty nights earlier this month outside his home in Oxfordshire.
The beautiful patterns, called "fern frost", reflect myriad water molecules arranged in six-sided patterns, a deep symmetry governed by the geometry of the molecule itself. LINK

Artist creates 20ft figure out of rock without using a Hammer or Chisel

An artist has spent three years scouring the globe for individual rocks which resemble body parts - to make a remarkable 2.5-tonne sculpture of the human form.
Duncan Elliott, 43, hauled stones ranging from the size of marbles up to 90kg from fields and mountains across Europe.
Each rock he used was precisely the right form - and proportionally the right size - for the body part it represents and has not been chipped or shaped.
Examples of where the rocks came from:
•Fingernails - beaches of Panormo, north coast of Crete
•Left thigh - a churchyard in Bristol
•Parts of the wings - hillside on the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire and cliff tops in Paxos, Ionian Greece
•Parts of the ribs - foot of cliffs on Barafundle Bay beach, Pembrokeshire
•Ankle fibula - by a roadside near Rodopos, north coast of Crete
•Part of thigh - fields near Ashbourne, Derbyshire
•Part of foot - Black Mountains near Mazamet, Southern France
•Parts of face - hillside outcrop near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire and mountains of Halki, Aegean Greece
•Parts of lower leg - on open ground near Lydford Gorge, Devon
•Biceps - Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

A Girl from Namibia Who Has a Special Bond with Animals

In 1990, Tippi Degré – daughter of Alain Degré and Sylvie Robert, a couple who chose to relinquish their lives in France for the freedom of nature in Southern Africa – was born in the newly independent Namibia. Her parents worked as freelance wildlife photographers and film makers. At 10 months the toddler was exploring the Namibian bush and desert.
For 10 years, Tippi wandered the bush bare footed, making friends with all sorts of animals: leopards, caracals, mongooses, baboons and snakes.
Her playground was the hills and the harsh desert tribe lands of southern Africa; as the family wandered the bush land, Tippi picked up all kinds of friends – like Abu, a five ton (28-year-old) elephant she calls “her brother”.
She would ride to a water hole on top of Abu and splash with the elephants of the herd, cuddle giant bullfrogs, lion cubs or meerkats; and became a grasshopper hunting specialist with the chameleons she was so fond of.
Tippi also befriended the Himba tribes people and the Bushmen of the Kalahari, who taught her how to survive on roots and berries and hence gave her practical experience of real life in the bush.
Life as a bush baby came to an end after her last year of "freedom" in Madagascar when Tippi moved to the French capital with her mother six years ago. But both in fact and in her heart, she remained an African. LINK, video next.

Meet Van Moth, the artist who paints with bugs

He is the artist who paints without putting brush to canvas.
Instead, Steven Kutcher uses moths, beetles, spiders, flies, honey bees, butterflies, grasshoppers - and even Hissing Cockroaches from Madagascar.
He dips the insects in paint, places them on a blank canvas and lets their movement create a string of colorful paintings.
The artist, who lives in Los Angeles, is a keen environmentalist and says he ensures his paint-soaked insects are unharmed.
He said: "I use water-based, nontoxic gouache paints which easily wash off. I have to take good care of them. After all, they are artists."
Mr Kutcher's bug art grew out of his work as an insect-handler for Hollywood films, including Spider-Man - he helped paint the tiny red and-blue spider that took a bite out of star Tobey Maguire and turned him into the superhero.
The artist's interest in insects began on childhood summer holidays in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where he collected fireflies. LINK

Nobuo Takahashi"s Animated Landscapes

“Musashino Plateau” and “Japan” — a pair of 3D computer animations directed by Nobuo Takahashi — illustrate (in dramatic fashion) how Japan’s landscape changed during the postwar period of rapid economic growth. The animations begin slowly with the early postwar recovery years, but the pace quickens to a frenzy as explosive growth during the bubble years (late ’80s/early ’90s) transforms the cityscape into a chaotic, tightly packed jumble of single-family homes, large apartment complexes and high-rise buildings. In the end, development grinds to a halt with the collapse of the bubble. LINK

Here's a video showing some of the Bubblegum Sequencer's current features:

Extraordinary pictures of the alphabet - spelled out on Butterflies' Wings

Every one of these extraordinary images comes from the brilliant patterns on the wings of moths and butterflies. These designs - each one unique to its species - are used either to attract a mate or for disguise against predators.
Photographer Kjell Sandved has made it his life's work to capture them and create this amazing butterfly alphabet, with every letter from A to Z and every number from 1 to 9. Check these out they are cool. LINK

Robotic Dog Is Like a Real Dog, But Lifeless

Have you always wanted a dog but were unable to get one due to an allergy, totally mean parents, or some other completely legitimate excuse to keep a lovable bundle of joy out of your life? Well, good news! Technology is now making it possible for you to get a robotic version of man's best friend that improves upon the original by not soiling the carpet, needing to be taken for walks, or having a soul!
This robotic pup from Japan responds to sounds and being pet, barks, and moves sort of like a real dog. It's just like having a real puppy except not as fun. But hey, if you just can't get a real dog and have $270 kicking around, I guess this is your best option. Have a comment, will add it later when I edit. LINK, Via: Youtube

Book shelves with a built-in bench

There are two reasons why we feature Stanislav Katz’s website:

1. The amazing furniture that he made, like the curvy Chest of Drawers and the bookshelf with a built-in place to sit back and read.

2. The title of his website: In Soviet Latvia, Design Makes You!

Awesome Levitating Train

Have a look below if you want to try to figure out how it works, or simply kick off your shoes, hit play and enjoy the ride.
The core of the bearings consists of a magnetic rail and super-conducting bulks, cooled to a temperature of -196°C. During the cooling process, the magnetic field of the rail will be written in the superconductors, which are positioned at a set distance from the magnetic rail. This enables them to retain a set horizontal position in relation to the rail. Their super-conducting operational temperature is maintained in cryostats, initially through cooling in liquid nitrogen. Lego Terminator Skull Gives Us the Evil Eye

this evil Lego skull, inspired by Arnie's death-machine Terminator, is almost a step too far toward science-fiction-becomes-reality-and-rips-our-neck-apart. Those eyes are following me! Ok, so those eyes are actually motor driven using parts from a Mindstorms set, as is the chomping jaw, but its creator Snyderman has gone so far beyond the usual comfy Lego model it's creepy. Thank god he restrained himself to just the skull. LINK: Gizmodo

The World’s 5 Most Venomous Species

The Brazilian wandering spider is the most toxic spider in the world, more than earning its greek name of murderess. These spiders are really creepy for several reasons. One, it’s fierce. This is not some wimpy spider that will run away at the first sign of a human, allowing careless hikers to escape a painful death without even knowing they’re in danger. No, these spiders will attack anyone and anything they see as threatening. They’re both deadly and aggressive. Second, they’re not incredibly easy to avoid. They get the “wandering” part of their name from the fact that they roam around, rather than live in a particular web or tree. In densely populated areas, you can imagine how many people get bitten by an aggressive spider that wanders all over the place. They’re responsible for more cases of venom intoxication in Brazil than any other animals. Thankfully, even if the spider bites you it might not inject venom. Only about a third of it’s victims receive venomous bites. But if you do get any venom, you’re really going to regret it. It’s reportedly one of the most painful venoms in existence, thanks in large part to a high concentration of serotonin in the venom. While the venom is potentially fatal, the worst thing the Brazilian spider can cause would probably only make you die of embarrassment. The venom can cause priapism, an erection that won’t go away and might actually cause impotence. There is an antidote to the venom, but since it is so fast acting you’d better be carrying it on you if you’re out in the South American jungle. You’re not getting to a hospital in time. LINK

Seven boys play big Harmonica (Feb, 1932)

Seven boys are needed to play a huge harmonica recently demonstrated at Detroit, Mich., and which is declared to be the largest of its kind in the world. It measures eight feet in length, giving sufficient space for each performer to render the part assigned to him in music orchestrated especially for the big instrument. There are 770 notes in all on the scale of the gigantic mouth organ.
Remember this was back in 1932. Sure had some interesting instruments back then. LINK

How To Make a vision-guided fireball-throwing catapult

Every hacker wants a budget to do bigger, cooler hacks. Well, we got our budget, all $1000 of it, and decided to turn a borrowed industrial robot into a catapult, a hack we'd been hoping to do for a long, long time. We'd been joking about throwing heavy objects with one of these robots ever since we saw the payload specs and an anvil in the shop.
We wanted to make a catapult that could destroy a car with bowling balls from at least 80 feet away, throw fireballs, and be controlled through a computer vision system so it could be aimed from a laptop. Result? Success.
More of the how to in the link. Also here is 2 videos.

Aquaduct mobile filtration vehicle

The Aquaduct is pedal powered vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for the developing world. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.
The Aquaduct is the winning entry in the Innovate or Die contest put on by Google and Specialized. The contest challenge was to build a pedal powered machine that has environmental impact. LINK, Via: Youtube

Jennifer Maestre Sculpture

Look closely at the fantastic sea creatures created by south african born, massachusetts based sculptor Jennifer Maestre and you will see that they’re made of pencils. that’s right, you heard me. Jen’s current work is skillfully crafted from hundreds and hundreds of colored pencils. They’re cut into one inch pieces, sharpened and then drilled through to become beads, and then sewn together using a peyote stitch. In each of these incredible works you can feel the approach-avoid paradox from her medium - a clear and surprising achievement (and one of her goals). You can also see the genesis and extension of a simply fascinating idea. LINK
