Lee25: Colin Lee

Lee25 is the portfolio of Colin Lee, a very talented Illustrator and designer from London, UK. His portfolio, though minimum, shows huge potential. It consists of a variety of highly detailed vector illustrations and complex typographic work, created for both personal and commercial projects. The elegant D&G logotype was influenced by the Rocco and Baroque periods, and made in collaboration between Colin and Pete Harrison. More of Colin’s work can be viewed at lee25 and his deviant gallery.

The Little Girl Giant

This video is part of the The Sultan's Elephant performed by Royal De Luxe, a French street theater group. Some of the dolls movements are very natural and give it that extra creepy effect.

Aganetha Dyck Works With Bees To Make Art

Canadian Born Aganetha Dyck has shown her work extensively in over 30 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions across Canada and internationally since 1975. Perhaps best known for her collaborative work with live honeybees, Aganetha’s most recent practise has concentrated on placing ordinary household objects in beehives, allowing the bees to become her artistic partners by adding wax sculptures to the objects. The image to your right is part of a collaboration between Canadian artist Richard Dyck and Agnetha involving a flatbed scanner inside a beehive. Apparently the bees paint as they move relative to the scan head over the scanner bed, their images compressing and smearing anfractuously. Incidentally, sunlight is controlled with the lid of the beehive. LINK

Kris Lewis’ Portraiture

Enthusiasts and appreciators of the art of portrait painting will love the deeply compelling and dreamy works of Kris Lewis. From his bio: [Kris] studied Illustration at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he excelled in figurative painting. His major influences include Bougereau, the Pre- Raphaelites, Mucha, early Italian Renaissance painters, and the folklore of his Latvian heritage. Lewis’ most recent works are of a surrealist quality, replete with historical and biblical references and psychological undertones. LINK

Amazing Magnetic Art Sculpture!

This art piece is by SACHIKO KODAMA and currenly on display at the Patricia Faure Gallery at the Bergamot Station. THIS VIDEO IS NOT TIME LAPSE. IT IS ALL FILMED AND PLAYED BACK IN REAL TME.

In 2000, Sachiko began work on a ferrofluid art project that she named "Protrude, Flow".
Ferrofluid is a very interesting material originally developed by NASA it has now found itself been used for a whole range of devices including dampers for controlling and stabilizing large building that move around in the wind. Whats also amazing is that they have such lovely visual qualities when magnetized. The term liquid architecture is used a lot in interactive architecture based on the ideas of how architecture becomes animated by adding the 4th Dimension of Time. Sachiko has taken this idea of liquid architecture more literally with these stunning sculptures made from Ferrofluid which changes its state by the introduction of electro-magnetic waves into the fluid turning it solid. As you stand around and watch this piece, you get literally mesmerized as the ferrofluid (guided by magnets) follows its track and changes its forms. LINK: Youtube

Wearable computer for colorblind painter

Neil Harbisson, the artist who painted the works above, suffers from achromatopsia, complete color blindness. He now paints with the assistance of the Eyeborg system, a head-mounted camera that identifies 360 colors and translates them into sounds that Harbisson hears in an earpiece.
Harbisson is fortunate in that he has both an art background (his Spanish mother is an amateur artist) and a musical one. He has played the piano since he was a youngster, and this has helped him to assimilate the sounds. “It’s like the chords and scales of a piano and the different sounds they make,” he said. “So it’s as if I’m composing on the piano.” He also wears the Eyeborg in everyday life. “I’ve got used to all the sounds,” he said. “It’s noisy but probably not much more noisy than a very busy city street.” LINK

The Art Of Jim Warren

Jim Warren was born in Nov 24, 1949 in Long Beach, CA to Don and Betty Warren. He is one of the most creative and prolific artists of our time.

Pen Style Personal Computer

Look closely and guess what they could be… Are they pens with cameras? No, much better than that:

A possible next step in personal computer technology, this is an experimental product called the P-ISM, described by NEC designers as a “Pen-style Personal Networking Gadget Package.” (By the way, “pismo” means a written letter in Russian… are these Japanese scientists secretly studying Russian language?) A prototype of the system, which cost a reported $30,000 to build, was unveiled at ITU Telecom World in 2003.

The concept is outlined as follows on the NEC Design Web site:
“P-ISM is a “pen-computer” package including five functions: a pen-style cellular phone with a handwriting data input, virtual keyboard, a very small projector, camera scanner, and personal ID key with cashless pass function. P-ISMs are connected with one another through short-range wireless technology. The whole set is also connected to the Internet through the cellular phone function. This personal gadget in a minimalist pen style enables the ultimate ubiquitous computing.”

The Rolling Bridge

Heatherwick Studio's Rolling Bridge is located within a new residential, office and retail quarter set around part of the Grand Union Canal.
Rather than a conventional opening bridge mechanism, consisting of a single rigid element that lifts to let boats pass, the Rolling Bridge gets out of the way by curling up until its two ends touch. While in its horizontal position, the bridge is a normal, inconspicuous steel and timber footbridge; fully open, it forms a circle on one bank of the water that bears little resemblance to its former self.
Twelve meters long, the bridge is made in eight steel and timber sections, and is made to curl by hydraulic rams set into the handrail between each section.

Tai Fu: Typhoon Surfing in Japan

From July to September each year, Japan lives in fear of Tai Fu - or typhoons - that are renowned for taking lives and devastating coastlines. When the typhoons hit, everyone from the hi-tech cities to sleepy fishing towns stop and brace themselves for the hellish onslaught.

Last month, in a continuation of his quest to traverse the globe in search of new and challenging waves, Australia's veteran big-wave adventurer, Ross Clarke-Jones set out to harness that energy and surf a typhoon in Japan.

Ross was joined by local Japanese tow-surfer Shimpei Horiguchi and a crew of some of the most experienced big-wave surfers on the planet including Tom Carroll, Brazilian Carlos Burle, Hawaiians Ian Walsh and Jun Jo and fellow Aussie Beau Emerton. LINK: Youtube

Kokiriko Bushi

Omodaka’s 21st-century disco version of Kokiriko Bushi — an ancient folk song that Gokayama (Toyama prefecture) villagers used to perform for the local Shinto deities — combines synthesized vocals with a Stevie Wonder-ish bassline and ’80s video game chiptune sounds, and the wonderfully quirky and surreal video (animated by Teppei Maki) features a fragile skeleton dancer that shares the floor with lots of disembodied hands and floating eyeball-headed ladies.

LINK

Incidentally, the kokiriko is a type of percussion instrument made from old bamboo used in the roofs of traditional farmhouses. After being all but forgotten, Kokiriko Bushi was revived in the mid-20th century and has become one of Japan’s most well-known folk songs.

Teppei Maki also directed the animation for DJ Kentaro’s Tasogare Highway High…

Illustration’s by Panni Malek

Fresh out of art school and ready to rock the East coast, Panni Malek has been producing some fantastic works which leaves me expecting even greater works in the future. She transforms old pinup style look of the female with a modern twist. From her bio:

A native Angelina, Panni Malek was born in 1984 in sunny West Hollywood. She has a taste for fine fashion, lingerie and antique lace. In her art, she explores themes of beauty, sexual provocation, neo-burlesque and social notions of femininity. She is highly influenced by eyelashes, vintage Emilio Pucci, Victorian textile, Art Nouveau, girls and hearts. Her oil paintings are a unique combination of classical realistic rendering and graphic textile design. She graduated with honors in 2006 from Otis College of Art and Design with a B.F.A in illustration. She’s currently residing in New York City working towards her M.F.A. in painting. She spends long days painting in her pink apartment with her new kitten Hera. LINK

Astonishing Worlds of Greg Simkins

From (southern California) Graffiti artist to pop surrealist, Greg “Craola” Simkins is an incredible artist without limits. With his cartoonist sensibility, designer approach and a unique vision Simkins brings a fresh new style into a world of bizarre (sometimes scary) creatures, curiously playful characters living among the fauna of some strange worlds he creates for them. His inspiration behind these odd characters and worlds comes from an interesting fusion of old/ retro cartoons, books, animal documentaries, and music. This mix enables him to fully realize his dreams and so bring his wonderful stories to the surface of each multi layed painting. Simkins’ approach is equally interesting and could be considered unconventional; each piece is subject to a long and involved process, much like the work of a designer. This approach is just one of the many things that makes his art fresh, unique and extremely appealing. LINK

Kelsey Brookes’ Paintings

Kelsey Brookes, a former trained scientist who now lives and works in San Diego as an illustrator and painter. Brookes describes his art as an “unrefined [and some say unskilled] mix of sex, comedy and animals…born from a true passion for all three” (not always at the same time). Amidst this unpolished painterly form of art, exists some fine decor, symbols and quilt patterned headdresses - all in striking acrylic colors.

Kelsey’s paintings have been shown throughout the Europe and US and featured in a host of pop culture and design publications such as Blood Wars, Happy, Staf, Re:Up, and Beautiful Decay. He is currently represented internationally by the Lazarides gallery (London). LINK

Yosuke Ueno’s Pop/Cosmic Surrealism

Young Japanese artist Yosuke Ueno creates exciting outre paintings with an superb mix of cute and surreal cosmic type imagery. You can find plenty of comparable similarities in his style to western pop surrealist/lowbrow artists. Infact, many of his beautifully executed drawings look extremely like the work of Mark Ryden.
Yosuke Ueno’s first exhibition was held in Tokyo in 1994. More successful shows followed in Japan, in New York and in Los Angeles. Mondo Bizzarro Gallery presented his work in Europe, for the first time in 2006.
One will notice that Yosuke’s art is full of icons, and he has put a page describing them, so we understand his iconography much better. LINK

kuski’s Fantastic Realism

“His works share his thoughts on psychological issues, religious ideology, and aesthetics. Yet he never strays from the honesty within himself though he has had to shed many masks in order to do so. He finds the materialistic world of popular culture as the food for self-indulgence, self-escapism, and shallow-heartedness. Kuski is obsessed with exposing the illusions we created as a result of fear in our minds…” LINK

Stress Management:

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience,
raised a glass of water and asked, "How heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued,
"And that's the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
as the burden becomes increasingly heavy,
we won't be able to carry on.
As with the glass of water,
you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.
So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down.
Don't carry it home.
You can pick it up tomorrow."

So, my friend, put down anything that may be a burden to you right now.
Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while.
Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

* Always read stuff that will make you look good
in case you die in the middle of it.

* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again,
it was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply be kind to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,
because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

* We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull.
Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

After I read this I just had to post it. Alot of truth in these words.

David Field’s Photographic Art

The series of images is a cerebral exploration of sensuality involving lifeless forms coming to life - David Fields on ‘pleasures of the flesh’.
New York based photographer David Field centers his work around the fundamentals of both concept and composition in the creation of surrealistic, attention grabbing ‘out-of-this-world’ imagery. He uses a variety of photoshop techniques (mainly manipulation and composition) in all his complex imagery. Each image often takes him months to complete, using an illustrators thought process to slowly build up layer by layer. LINK

Janet Skiles - “Quasi-Realism” With Depictions of Nature

Janet Skiles is a nature-loving freelance illustrator who lives in Illinois. She paints very intricately detailed illustrations that exhibit a strong passion for nature - in all its wondrous forms. This grows from an idealistic view of the world. She considers her art ‘quasi-realism with a whimsical depiction of natural scenes’. Her works are created using traditional watercolor and airbrush. Recently, however, she began working digitally, discovering the infinite possibilities of using Photoshop to enhance existing illustrations or to create new ones.

Janet Skiles clients include: National Geographic, National Wildlife, and The Smithsonian Gift Catalogue, as well as other gift catalogues and nature stores. Her illustrations also appear in journals, note cards and stationary, needlework, decorative flags, holiday themed decorations, puppets, and more. LINK

Hang Nga

Though there are some very nice things about Da Lat, the main attraction (for us) was Hang Nga's Tree House, known to the locals as "The Crazy House". It's owned by the daughter of the ex-president of Vietnam, who studied architecture in Moscow. Being a celebrity, it was easier for her to get permission to build such a place than, say, you or me.
In mythology, Hang Nga was a moon fairy, which points to yet another place where the designer might have studied.

Amazing moment the world's biggest Christ was struck by lightning

Heavens above: The statue is struck during Sunday's storms:

At 00:34am on 13th February 2008
This was the dramatic scene as the world's largest statue of Jesus was hit by lightning.
The bolt parted the thunderclouds over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to strike Christ the Redeemer.
The statue is 130ft tall, is made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete and stands atop the 2,296ft Corcovado mountain overlooking the city.
It was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
Sunday's storm caused havoc in Rio, felling trees in several neighbourhoods - but did not damage the statue.

This amazing photograph gives whole new meaning to the phrase "May God strike me with lightning if..." LINK

Dubai to Build the World's Largest Arch Bridge in 2012

If any real city on our planet can claim an active stake in creating the urban landscape of the future, it's probably Dubai. Artificial islands arranged in the shape of the world? Check. The world's only seven-star hotel? Check. And in 2012, it will also become home to the largest, tallest arch bridge ever.
Here's some info on the bridge as envisioned by New York architecture firm Fxfowle:

- It's one mile long and 670 feet tall.
- It will have 12 lanes for traffic.
- It will cost 817 million dollars.
- The design has Sheikh Mohammed's official stamp of approval.
- The bridge will carry more than 2,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.
- A metro line will run across the middle.
- Construction begins in March, with a slated completion date of 2012. Images by Fxfowle. LINK

THREE HEADED TURTLE !!!!!!!

This turtle was born in Peru with three heads!! The middle head is underdeveloped, but does have eye slits. It does not have a fully developed brain. The other two heads function perfectly and both of them eat. This turtle has one set of lungs and one heart. We originally called them MYRTLE and SQUIRTLE The TWO HEADED TURTLE until our local vet confirmed that the third head was really an undeveloped head......now we call that head Thirdle. Man Builds Full Scale Mercedes F1 From 956,000 Matchsticks

Michael Arndt is a man of matchsticks. Over the course of six years, using 956,000 matchsticks, 1686 tubes of glue, and at least three different varieties of mustache, he built a full-scale replica of a McLaren 4/14 F1 car, at a cost of around 6000 Euros. The giant model takes up Arndt's entire kitchen and probably his social life. It can be broken down into 45 parts for easy transport to various matchstick-builders conventions. LINK

Wang Niandong’s Paintings - some (NSFW)

An artist known as Wang Niandong is right at the bleeding edge of Contemporary Chinese Art. His stunning paintings capture the urbanization and westernization that are currently taking place in China. Most (if not all his paintings) portray model type women in very interesting poses; often conveying either happiness or sorrow. Niandong always paints these with a complete “realist” eye for detail, coloration and composition. Moreover, with each delicate depiction Wang purposely gives new direction to the aesthetic female image.
Bio: Born in Sichuan, China in 1978, Wang learned to paint as a child. He attended the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, and was awarded his master’s degree from Sichuan Fine Art Institute, Oil Painting Department. Wang is currently an Associate Professor in Sichuan Fine Art Institute, Chongqing, China. Frequently described as young, talented, and incredibly handsome, Wang’s works display his fascination with unattainable women… LINK

The Paintings of Amy Crehore

The work of Amy Crehore, a sweet, talented pop surrealist painter/illustrator from Pennsylvania, NJ, and VA equally. She now resides in Eugene, Oregon where she paints some of the most brightly colorful dream like scapes. At first glance, Amy’s artwork might appear similar in style to illustrations from the pages of children’s books. Though, reading further into her finely tuned imagery, you’ll find an array of promiscuous (yet sensuous) dualities between naked women and curious animals (mostly CHEEKY monkeys). Noticeably, vintage musical instruments feature highly in Amy’s work, revealing and contributing to the pop surreal narratives that are both playful, poetic and utterly absorbing. LINK

Laurie Lipton’s (Macabre) Hyper-Realistic Pencil Drawings

Inspired by the hyper-realistic paintings of the 15th-Century Flemish masters, Laurie Lipton has developed a unique, decidedly painterly graphic technique using a permanent-point pencil. At first glance her drawings look like photographs, upon further inspection many thousands of distinct, precise, cross-hatched pencil-strokes, build up the rich and monochromatic tones. While working exclusively in black and white (“because those are the colours of memories and phantoms” she says) her unsettling and macabre images resonate a slanted psychological realm where rooms are ghost traps filled with yearning souls, secret fears and disturbing memories…… LINK
