Musical wood saws

A standard hand saw can be used to play music! By tweaking/bending the blade in an “S” shape, one can hit the “sweet spot” with a mallet or use a cello bow to make the saw “sing.” The sound produced is very ethereal sounding -like a woman’s high singing voice or a theramin. The tonal range depends on the length and width of the saw blade. The “sweet spot” can be bent up and down the length of the blade while the note depends on the width at that point.
The musical saw is beautiful in it’s simplicity. The video above is of Sione Aleki playing Amazing Grace on the musical saw.

The Nyckelharpa
The nyckelharpa, meaning “key harp,” is a traditional Swedish instrument. The first clues of this instruments existence are from 14th century European relief sculptures. The nyckelharpa is classified as a bowed string instrument. It is played in much of the same way a violinists plays a violin with the exception of the 37 wooden keys which, when depressed, act as frets (pushing up from below the strings, changing the pitch). Halos are among the most well-known of optical phenomena and appear under a variety of guises. The most frequently scene is the 22º halo, caused by ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds, yet the particular shape and orientation of the crystals can create variation in the appearance of the halo. During very cold weather halos formed by crystals close to the ground reflect sunlight between them sending it in several directions at once, an effect known as diamond dust.

Natural ice dam finally breaks

A NATURAL ice dam in southern Argentina broke open.
The 60m high wall of ice from the Perito Moreno glacier that usually divides Lake Argentina in Patagonia bursts from time to time under the built-up pressure of the held-back water.
The event is one of the prime tourist attractions of Argentina.
But until now it had occurred in warmer seasons.
This year's breaking of the dam was forecast well in advance, though the exact day was unknown, so relatively few visitors - around 300 - were on hand to photograph the phenomenon.
Expert predictions that the rupture could still be days away meant Argentine television stations were caught unprepared and were forced to air images of the last collapse.
An internet broadcast, however, caught this year's rupture live for an estimated 150,000 viewers.
The Perito Moreno glacier is the largest of 356 rivers of ice in Los Glaciares National Park, which each year is visited by thousands of tourists.
It is one of the largest glaciers in the world, measuring 275 sq km and 5km wide at its mouth. It is 2800km southeast of Buenos Aires. LINK, Via: Youtube

The incredible 'Stone Nudes' who rock climb completely naked (NSFW)

It is a breathtaking - and death-defying feat - which redefines the term extreme sport.
Battling both gravity and the elements, the climber claws her way up a granite boulder by just her fingertips.
For most, the lack of ropes and safety equipment would be a perilous step too far.
But this woman has gone even further and abandoned her clothes to take part in the new sport of naked rock climbing.
The climber is one of a series of super-fit 'Stone Nudes' captured in action on the cliffs and mountains of America.
Without clothes, specialist shoes or other equipment, participants say the experience captures the 'true essence of the climbing spirit.'
It is the latest extreme sport craze to sweep the US, and is now tipped to become a popular pastime in the UK.
And as these incredible pictures taken in America show, exercise has never been so attractive.
The 'Stone Nudes' idea is the brainchild of California-based photographer and rock climber Dean Fidelman.
His photographs have now been used to create a new 2009 'Stone Nudes' calendar, which he is selling on his website. LINK

The Story Behind 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game'

In America, baseball is called the national pastime. Organized baseball was well into its glory years before other sports such as football, basketball, hockey and soccer were drawing much of an audience. It is only natural that one of America's most popular sing-along songs relates to the sport.
'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' is a simple tune that tells of a girl who wants her beau to take her to a baseball game instead of to another popular spot. The song turns 100 years old this year, and the United States Postal Service has commemorated the event with a beautiful new stamp. LINK: Presurfer
