Lego Robotic Arm

Uploaded by sumthinelse5790 on Feb 5, 2012 This is a model prosthetic arm made entirely of Legos. -hand movements and wrist abduction/adduction are Lego pneumatics -wrist pronation/supination, wrist flexion/extension, and elbow flexion/extension are Lego motors (Power Functions) The main purpose of this project was to accurately mimic the full range of motion of a normal human arm and hand. The secondary goal was to maximize speed and power, yet maintain a consistent ratio between the two for demonstration purposes. It is important to note that it was designed as an above elbow prosthesis, and the yellow shoulder is only meant to act as a static model. The amount of weight it can lift is limited to the shape of the object and orientation of the wrist and elbow, but it can't do much with more than a couple pounds. The controller is a rudimentary cluster of switches and joysticks. A 4-motor air compressor with pressure-regulation was made of Legos. LINK: Youtube

The worlds most amazing toy... mechanical engineering

This is one example of Uberstix and what one Uberstix part can do. Actually Uberstix are NOT bendable... the parts are rigid... that is why you can build the twin tower at the end and pick it up... if the parts were bendable, the tower would not be stable... and that's pretty cool from an engineering standpoint... From unsinkable pirate and sail boats to skyscrapers with real blueprints, Uberstix opens up a whole new world and makes anything possible... 8 Uberstix parts will build things that Fly, Float, Sail, and build simple and compound machines and robots 8 Uberstix parts= more than 125,000,000,000,000,000 options. Mountain Light # Timescapes Timelapse

Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby each film frame is captured at a rate much slower than it will be played back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. Time-lapse photography can be considered to be the opposite of high speed photography. Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, such as the motion of the sun and stars in the sky, become very pronounced.
Time-lapse is the extreme version of the cinematography technique of undercranking, and can be confused with stop motion animation.

The World’s Largest Coffee Bean Mosaic

(Video Link) Saimir Strati composes mosaics out of unusual substances, including toothpicks and nails. His message in this 270-square foot mosaic made of coffee beans is simple: “One world, one family, one coffee.” The five human figures represent five continents (sorry, Australia and Antarctica) uniting together in a caffeinated peace. -Via: The Presurfer | Via: Neatorama

RIP Florence Green, the Very Last World War I Veteran

In the past year, we brought you the obituaries of Frank Buckles, the last U.S. veteran of World War I and Claude Choules, the last surviving combat veteran of that war. Yesterday, the very last member of the military from the War to End All Wars passed away. Florence Green was only 17 years old when she signed up for the Women’s Royal Air Force in 1918. She worked at the military airfields in Norfolk. Mrs Green spent her war days working ”all hours” serving officers breakfast, lunch and dinner and would often spend time wandering the base simply ”admiring the pilots”. Before her death she said: ”I enjoyed my time in the WRAF. There were plenty of people at the airfields where I worked and they were all very good company. ”I would work every hour God sent but I had dozens of friends on the base and we had a great deal of fun in our spare time. In many ways I had the time of my life. ”I met dozens of pilots and would go on dates. I had the opportunity to go up in one of the planes but I was scared of flying. ”It was a lovely experience and I’m very proud.” Mrs. Green was a couple weeks short of 111 years old. Salvador Dali - his home in Portlligat

To be known for his surrealistic paintings and art. His house, which he partly constructed and planned himself, is a most practical and surprisingly well organized villa, placed in a small hill ending at the shore of the Mediterranian Sea. Beatifully situated in a most attractive marine landscape. Carefully planned rooms and a most inviting garden, overlooking the sea, with a grand swimmingpool. In- and outside with loads of pieces of his art, surralistic as naturalistic. A place well worth to visit - only app. 1 hr. from Figueres. Remember to book in advance as only 8 people is admitted pr. slot. Along Costa Brava, Spain not far from the French Border and his museum in Figueres you will find Salvador Dali's home at the seashore of Portlligat outside the small Spanish/Catalan town Cadaqués. Beautiful Time-Lapse Footage Of Red Aurora Australis

Red Aurora Australis from Alex Cherney on Vimeo.

{Description from the person that posted this.} LINK, Via: Vimeo After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions. The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13. Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise.
