After big snow and ice events in the Southeast, Plains, and Midwest last week, 49 out of the 50 states currently have snow on the ground – yes, even Hawaii, where snow falls in Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea all winter.
Thanks a lot, Florida. We almost had a perfect record. But you just had to go and be different, didn’t ya?

Five Places Where Land is Free
Some communities need residents. Some need jobs. Some need development. In order to get those things, a few communities will give you free land! These small communities want you to build a house and make yourself at home.
Several small cities in rural Kansas will give you a land lot if you agree to fashion housing of at least 1,000 square feet on it. Mobile homes are welcome, and we’ll be sure to wave as yours flies by in the next tornado. If one lot isn’t large enough and you’d like to garden, the city of Marquette, Kansas would be pleased as punch to just give you a second lot adjacent to the first, also for free, says its website. These are developed lots, by the way — they already have water, sewer and electricity.
There are opportunities in Nebraska, Iowa, Maine, and Michigan as well. Link, -Thanks, Steven Johnson! Via: Neatorama

U.S. States Renamed for Countries with Similar GDPs
Fascinating map comparing US states to countries with comparable gross domestic products. Original source (and year) unknown, so it could be a little outdated.
(Yes, we know that “Equador” [Alaska] should be Ecuador, and that Hong Kong [Alabama] is no longer a country.) LINK

2-year-old girl is a whiz at geography
Harika Petchetti, 2, is not only already reading, but she's a budding geography whiz.
Her love for geography started when her seven year old brother was studying for a geography bee and she learned alongside him.
Upstairs in her home, Harika's parents have put up a map of the US and a map of the world.
She knows all of the states as well as all of the countries of the world and their capitals.

Wettest States in the United States
The ten states that get the most rain every year on average with the rainiest city and place for each state plus the city that has the most rainy days per year for each state. Most people associate Washington and Oregon with rain but neither state comes close to making this list because both states are semi-desert in the eastern portions. One place on the list gets 460 inches of rain per year or about 1.2 inches of rain per day on average. How would you like to live there?
