Magnificent Macro Photos of Insect Eyes by Shikhei Goh

Photographer Shikhei Goh lives and works on a small industrialized island called Batam Island, that’s a 45 minute boat ride south of Singapore. Goh calls himself a “macro addict” and indeed his portfolio is loaded with incredible photographs of the local flora and fauna of Batam from turtles, lizards, birds and especially insects. My favorite images are his intimate shots of insect eyes that appear metallic and almost robotic. See much more over on 500px.

Kinetic Rain: 1,216 Computationally Controlled Bronze Raindrops at Changi Airport in Singapore

Berlin firm ART+COM just completed this stunning new kinetic sculpture in Terminal 1 of Changi Airport in Singapore. Kinetic Rain consists of two sets of 608 suspended raindrops made from lightweight aluminum covered in copper which are raised and lowered in a 15-minute computationally designed choreography controlled from motors embedded in the ceiling. ART+COM created a similar though somewhat smaller piece for the BMW Museum in 2008.

The Pixel Cloud Skyscraper Is a JRPG Dream Fortress

This digital cloud skyscraper was a finalist in Singapore's recent contest to design a pavilion for the World Expo 2010. And it's nothing short of wondrous.

By Singapore-based Design Act, "My Dream, Our Vision" is constructed from 3866 cubes of varying opacity, and serves as a physical manifestation of the intangible: digital information floating above the green landscape. Embodying "xin" (or "new"), visitors are beckoned inside by music to post their dreams of tomorrow, to incite innovation.

And it just looks really, really cool. LINK

Singapore’s last village

It is a small island stuck in-between Malaysia and Indonesia. Within many of our lifetimes it was the location of some of the worst ethnic violence seen anywhere in the post-war era. Conversely, within ALL of our lifetimes it has been a shining example of strength through ethnic diversity and a model of progressiveness and modernism.

Singapore and the International Herald Tribune is reporting today that only one old-fashioned rural village remains in Singapore and it, too, is slated for “renewal” itself before long.
