World’s Largest Mud-Brick Building

“The walls of the Great Mosque are made of sun-baked mud bricks called ferey, a mud based mortar, and are coated with a mud plaster which gives the building its smooth, sculpted look. The walls are between 16 in. and 24 in. thick – the thickness varying with the wall’s height. Bundles of palm branches were included in the building to reduce cracking caused by frequent drastic changes in humidity and temperature and to serve as readymade scaffolding for annual repairs. The walls insulate the building from heat during the day and by nightfall have absorbed enough heat to keep the mosque warm through the night. Gutters, made of ceramic pipes, extend from the roofline and direct water drainage from the roof away from the walls. To protect the Great Mosque from water damage, in particular flooding by the Bani river, the entire structure was constructed on a raised platform 3 meters high. A set of six stairs, each decorated with pinnacles, leads to the mosque’s entrance.” w/ photos. LINK

Sunflower star has weird way of eating

A sunflower star can have up to 26 arms and 15,000 tube feet, which it can use to pry open a clam. The sunflower star then pushes its stomach out of its mouth and into the clam, digesting the hapless bivalve in its own shell.

The sunflower star is the largest sea star in the world. It's also one of the fastest animals on the ocean bottom, crawling one metre... a minute, which may not seem that fast to us but is speedy if you're a clam just chillin' on the sand.

European Wildcat

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) is a subspecies of the wildcat that inhabits forests of Western, Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, as well as Scotland, Turkey and the Caucasus Mountains; it has been extirpated from Scandinavia, England, and Wales. Some authorities restrict F. s. silvestris to populations of the European mainland, in which case populations of Scotland, Mediterranean islands, Turkey and Caucasus are regarded as separate subspecies.

The physical appearance of the European wildcat is much bulkier than that of the African wildcat and the domestic cat, although its weight is similar to the average housecat, as males of the species weigh an average of 5 kg (11 lb) and females 3.5 kg (7.7 lb), with strong seasonal weight fluctuations of up to 2.5 kg. The wildcat's thick fur, size and non-tapered tail are its distinguishing traits; it normally would not be mistaken for the domestic cat, although in practice, it is less clear whether the two are frequently correctly distinguished, as one study showed an error rate of 39%. Predominantly nocturnal, the wildcat is active in the daytime in the absence of human disturbance.

Blue headed Parrots (Pionus menstruus)

In South America, the Blue-headed Parrot is mainly an Amazonian species, including in the southeast the neighboring Araguaia-Tocantins River system as its eastern limit; a disjunct population lives southeastwards on Brazil's South Atlantic coast, a coastal strip from Pernambuco in the north to Espírito Santo state in the south, about 1500 km long. In northwest South America the range continues into Central American Panama to Costa Rica. It avoids the northern Andes cordillera spine, and a smaller contiguous area of central Venezuela and northern Colombia. A Pacific Ocean coastal strip continues the range, from southern Ecuador, north to Caribbean areas of northwestern Colombia and western Venezuela.

Dolphin birth captured on camera in Hawaii

A dolphin has been filmed giving birth to a female calf in a Hawaii resort.
Footage of the birth shows the calf emerging from its mother tail first before immediately swimming off.
The birth occurred in a man-made lagoon at Dolphin Quest Hawaii, where visitors can swim with dolphins.
The dolphin calf will be monitored closely over the next 30 days as this is the most critical period for the new-born, Julie Rocho-Levine from Dolphin Quest Hawaii said.
The baby dolphin will be named when it is one month old, officials said.

Minn. native Jessica Lange wins Emmy for 'American Horror Story'

ENTERTAINMENT It was a big night Sunday for Cloquet native Jessica Lange at the 64th annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. Lange took home the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role as the evil neighbor, Constance Langdon, in the FX series “American Horror Story,” reports The Huffington Post. She previously won a Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-Series or a Movie from the Golden Globes for the role, as well as a Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series trophy from the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actress is set to return to the second season of “American Horror Story” in October. Since it is an anthology series, Lange will play a completely different role in the new story, titled “American Horror Story: Asylum.”

The win in the category Sunday night earned Lange her second Emmy in four tries. She previously won for Best Leading Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for “Grey Gardens” in 2009. Lange, 63, is also a two-time Oscar winner, with a Best Supporting Actress win for “Tootsie” in 1983 and a Best Actress win for “Blue Sky” in 1995.
