LED Guitar Helps Beginners Learn To Play Like A Pro

Learning to play guitar usually means watching someone else place their fingers in the right spots and attempting to copy, then trying to remember where the heck you’re supposed to put them all when it comes time to play that chord again. That’s why this Fretlight LED guitar from Optek Music Systems seems like a fun and easy way to learn how to play. LED lights show you the proper finger placement for whichever song you’re playing, so you just have to follow the little red lights and you’ll be playing in no time. It’s like your own private tutor and light show all rolled into one!

100 Historical Guitar Riffs

(YouTube link)
If the history of rock ‘n’ roll had to be explained without words in a limited time, it would sound like this. Alex Chadwick plays all 100 guitar riffs in one take! They’re labeled, but they’ll be so familiar to you that you could probably name most without seeing the titles. This is thoroughly pleasant to listen to. -Via: The Daily What, Via: Neatorama

Roger Mayer, guitar effects maker for Hendrix, Page, Beck

Roger Mayer was an acoustic engineer for the British Navy who in the late 1960s, through his pal Jimmy Page, became the go-to electronic effects whiz for Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, and a bunch of other innovative musicians. For Hendrix, he built the Octavia, a pedal that doubled the input pitch an octave higher or lower and, natch, added fuzz. I love the 1968 photo above of Mayer with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Mayer is still in the game, making and selling guitar effects pedals Via: his site here. And for an interview with Mayer, check out the video below.

Roger Mayer is the electrical engineer who developed several electric guitar effects, most notably the Octavia, an effects pedal which reproduced the input signal one octave higher, and mixes the two sounds with some added fuzz. The effect was popularized by Jimi Hendrix, and can be heard during the solos on the song "Purple Haze". LINK, Via: Youtube

Millennium Falcon Guitar

What kind of guitar would Han Solo play a solo with? This Millennium Falcon Guitar, of course! Its maker, Travis S., told our pal Urlesque blog:

Tell us about the guitar’s construction.

I used a vintage Millennium Falcon toy / playset for the body. As it’s an electric guitar, the body material is relatively unimportant (in comparison to acoustic instruments) so i just had to concern myself with building the necessary structural elements of the instrument into the toy.

Since the aging plastic wouldn’t be able to withstand the tension of the strings, I pieced together a maple block running from end to end inside the ship. The bridge, neck, and strap pins connect to this piece; while attached firmly with some powerful glues the toy itself is almost entirely cosmetic.

The top of the toy has been routed out for the electronics, including some switch activated LEDs. Those required separate battery packs, which I made accessible using the structure of the toy; one pack is hidden in the original battery compartment while the other is attached to the ramp door that was designed to open.
