RIP Alex Chilton

Ben Greenman remembers singer and guitarist Alex Chilton, who died lastnight at age 59.

Alex Chilton, who died, wrote songs. He recorded songs. He made songs. He unmade them. In the end, the life was largely in song, and the songs all had life, and that's all there is to say, and there isn't anything that can be done. Once he covered "Let Me Get Close to You," which was Goffin-King via Skeeter Davis:

Jimi Hendrix's Final Recordings to be Released

40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix is still burning down sound barriers. A new album from the legendary guitarist's final recording session is set for release next month, called Valleys of Neptune, and will include songs that have never been commercially released.

The new release is a 12-track album of rarely-heard songs from some of the last recording sessions in Hendrix's brief career. The album will be released March 9th and is part of a project to rerelease all of his studio albums in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of his death.

Among the songs included are an instrumental cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," and alternative recordings of classics like "Stone Free," "Red House" and "Fire."

According to the guitarist's sister, Janie Hendrix, this album is indicative of her brother's peerless musical talent.

"My brother Jimi was at home in the studio. Valleys of Neptune offers deep insight into his mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist," she told Rolling Stone. Wisconsin police record 12 Days of Christmas spoof

A small-town US police force has recorded its very own 12 Days of Christmas, perhaps inevitably focusing on jelly doughnuts. The officers at Kenosha station, near Madison, Wisconsin, have put together the seasonal video, which instead of a partridge in a pear tree has an “untrained rookie”, as a gift from their chief.

Not all of the officers are natural vocalists, but they all throw themselves into the piece with gusto. Jelly doughnuts make the list at number four, while “five dirty squads (cars)” gets the long note treatment in manner of “five gold rings”. LINK, Via: Youtube

Pioneering professional nurse Florence Nightingale {wiki} was already 70 years old when she recorded this snippet for Thomas Edison and posterity in 1890. This recording has been redubbed to different formats and speed-corrected at least once, so the legibility after 119 years is due to Nightingale’s slow and overdramatic delivery. LINK

Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls Of Fire

Jerry Lee Lewis is one of the founding fathers of Rock 'n' Roll. He was one of the original Sun Records quartet along with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash who between them defined the music of a generation. His recording career has stretched from the mid-50's to the present day and his unique style of piano playing has influenced scores of musicians over the years.

Top 10 Eerie Recordings

Thomas Edison wasn't the first person to record sound. A Frenchman named Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville actually did it earlier.

He invented a device called the phonautograph, and, on April 9, 1860, recorded someone singing the words, "Au clair de la lune, Pierrot repondit." But he never had any intention of playing it back. He just wanted to study the pattern the sound waves made on a sheet of paper blackened by the smoke of an oil lamp.

A group of researchers found some of his old phonautograph papers and used a computer program to play the recording.

This recording captures the frequencies of Buffalo Approach and Buffalo Airport Tower. It runs from approximately 0314Z to 0325Z (10:14pm to 10:25pm local time) including approach communications with flight 3407. Some quiet space and irrelevant content has been removed to meet the 10 minute YouTube length limit. Flight 3407 is believed to have crashed around 0320Z (10:20pm local).

CLARENCE CENTER, New York (CNN) --Continental Airlines Plane Crash into House . Buffalo, New York, Erie County eye witness reports, interviews and home video. Raw Video Reports 12:30 AM Feb 13, 2009. CNN, Fox News, MSNBC edition.cnn.com A Continental Airlines Flight 3407, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 74-seat turboprop, crashed into a house near Buffalo, New York, late Thursday, killing all 49 people aboard and a person in the home. It was was en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Buffalo when it went down at around 10:20 p.m. ET, about seven miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

"This is easily the saddest day in the history of our airline," said Philip Trenary, CEO of Colgan Air.

It was "clearly a direct hit" on the house. See:
