Scientists in Antarctica used a time-lapse camera to capture the formation of a brinicle — an icicle made from brine. As the salty water sank, it froze, forming a spike of brine down to the seafloor. As it grew over several hours, the brinicle killed everything in its path, including numerous unlucky starfish.

The Museo Subacuatico de Arte (MUSA) is a project designed to divert tourists from the fragile coral reefs of Cancun and Isla Mujeres. British artist Jason de Caires Taylor created ’life casts’ made from a special type of cement which encourages coral to grow. He used local Mexican people from a broad cross-section of society for the casts which were then anchored in an area that was originally barren and without much sea life. It is hoped that many of Cancun’s 750,000 visiting snorkelers and divers will be drawn to the installation.

A Giant Pacific Octopus mates only once and when it has done so, it has already begun dying. The mother will lay her eggs in her den and stay there and never leave.. not even to eat.. once the eggs hatch, she is allowed to leave.. but only in spirit.. her body must stay behind as a reminder of her ultimate sacrifice. Note: This starts out somewhat depressingly, with the body of a female octopus that died after reproducing—as all octopuses, male and female, do. But it quickly gets past that, and on to the wee, baby octopuses, floating around the sea. Turn off the sound to block out the sad song, and focus on that.

That cavernous mouth extends right around the Anglerfish’s head, its jaws armed with long, pointed, inward-folding teeth that allow easy access to the stomach but no escape from the mouth. This machine-like predator can expand its jaw and stomach to a huge size, enabling it to gulp down prey even bigger than itself. It’s probably a good thing for us that this fiend, also known as the sea devil, is found at depths of 3,300-6,600 ft. As far as we’re concerned, it can stay there. LINK
