The Volkswagen Transparent Factory in Dresden is where they make Volkswagen's luxury sedan, the Phaeton. The Transparent Factory is situated in the city center of Dresden, Germany. The factory's walls are made almost completely of glass. Its floors are covered entirely in Canadian maple. Its visitor-friendly layout was designed to accommodate up to 500 tourists per day. There are no smokestacks, no loud noises, and no toxic byproducts. The floors are so clean, you can eat off it. LINK: Youtube

Marc Newson's latest creation for Ikepod sees the Australian designer interpret the most iconic timepiece of all: The Hourglass. Director Philip Andelman traveled to Basel, Switzerland, to document the designer's modern take of the classic hourglass inside the Glaskeller factory. Each hand made hourglass comprises highly durable borosilicate glass and millions of stainless steel nanoballs, and is available in a 10 or 60 minute timer. LINK

Neatorama has recently featured Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, played on floppy disk drives. Several years ago we showed the piece played on an accordion. But we somehow missed this version, played on a glass harp. The instrumentalist is Robert Tiso. LINK: Neatorama
Smoking is bad for you! But let's be honest, smoke itself looks sorta cool. Here's a video of smoke looking like liquid, which makes it even cooler looking. You can even swirl the smoke around and pour it out like water.
To get that "liquid smoke" effect, the guy used an unfiltered cigarette (or joint for thicker smoke) and a cold glass. The key, he says, is to not breathe as you release the smoke into the cold glass or it'll throw things out of whack. The cold glass supposedly cools the smoke and makes it settle under the warm(er) air, which allows it to take on liquid-ish properties. Cool! Until someone gets cancer. The magical rug literally animates!!
When the rug is viewed through the specially designed glass coffee table, an animation of carp appears through a moire effect providing a surprise element of natural liveliness to the interior. The graphic apparition, replacing the traditional fish tank, is also a nod to the decreasing abundance of our most precious natural resource - water. Mythologically, the carp symbolises bravery and fortune. Linguistically, the "carp" becomes a humorous extraction of the "carpet" that reveals this intriguing little conversational piece on the floor. LINK: Youtube

This beautiful handmade knife is shaped entirely from fiber optic glass. You know, the stuff that gives us super fast internet. A knifemaker used a process called knapping, a throwback method of shaping stones into useful tools, to form it.
