The Stopped Clock Illusion

Chronostasis (from Greek χρόνος, chrónos, “time” and στάσις “standing”) is the illusion in which the first impression following a saccade (quick eye movement) appears to be extended in time. The most well-known version of this illusion is the stopped-clock illusion, where the first movement of the second hand of an analog clock, following the viewer’s directing attention to the clock, appears to take longer than the next movement. When eyes execute a saccade, perception of time stretches slightly backward. The viewer’s brain registers that they have been looking at the clock for slightly longer than they really have, producing the illusion that the second-hand is frozen for more than a second. Although this happens every time the eyes move from one fixation point to the next, it is rarely noticed. One explanation is that the brain is filling in the gap while the eyes move from looking at one thing to the next.

The Hourglass

Marc Newson's latest creation for Ikepod sees the Australian designer interpret the most iconic timepiece of all: The Hourglass. Director Philip Andelman traveled to Basel, Switzerland, to document the designer's modern take of the classic hourglass inside the Glaskeller factory. Each hand made hourglass comprises highly durable borosilicate glass and millions of stainless steel nanoballs, and is available in a 10 or 60 minute timer. LINK

Standard Time by Mark Formanek

"Standard Time" is the work of artist Mark Formanek, who filmed the whole thing as a documentary. I'm sure there's some deeper point about the indefatigable march of time and mankind's role in a digital age, but I mostly like it for the time-lapse footage. At Rotterdam Central Station (NL) a "digital" clock was shown for 24 hours from 27 November to 28 November, which was meticulously kept by a total of 36 workers. Each minute was carefully adjusted.

This animated film is an attempt to revive the philosophical values of some of the great artistic vanguards of the last century

It combines the surrealistic ideals of Salvador Dali with the mysterious creations of Niki de Saint Phalle and moulds together these two artistic approaches into the mind of a young Israeli kid in Jerusalem.

Dreams and reality are fused together in an atmosphere of surrealistic images. The fine line between these two worlds leaves us with a sense of confusion and questions the reality of dreams!

By animating the works of Dali and breathing life into the ''monster'' sculpture (in Jerusalem) of Niki de Saint Phelle, I have endeavored to honor the great talents of the words great artist. In addition, I have been able to acknowledge a fascinating, and hidden landmark of Jerusalem. LINK: Youtube

Time stands still in Trafalgar Square

The day London froze. Inspired by improv everywhere and made a reality by 100's of volunteers. At exactly 3:30pm on a secret cue, almost everyone in the square froze. The few bewildered tourists didn't know what was happening. For 5 minutes the participants held their positions, and then magically everyone unfroze.
