The Floating Isles of Lake Titicaca

The Floating Isles of Lake Titicaca
Most people know that Lake Titicaca, on the border of Peru and Bolivia, is one of the world's highest lakes at 12,500 ft. What most don't know is that one of its most unique features is 42 man-made floating islands called Uros. The Uros are made of totora reeds and were originally constructed for defensive purposes by the natives who live on and around the lake. The islands require constant maintenance and the tribes who live there, also referred to as Uros, work hard to keep them floating. Each year, tourists flock to the Uros to see these impressive feats of human ingenuity.

Salt Hotel

The hotel was built in 1993 by a salt artisan who saw a mint in the number of tourists looking for places to stay while visiting the flats. The lodge has 15 bedrooms, a dining room, a living room and a bar.

The buildings's roof, and bar are built of salt and even the floor is covered with salt granules. The walls are made of salt blocks stuck together with a cement-like substance made of salt and water. During rainy seasons, the walls are strengthened with new blocks, while the owners ask the guests to avoid licking the walls to prevent deterioration.

In the dining room of the Salt Hotel of Bolivia, the salt is always on the table. In fact, the salt is the table. LINK

Salar de Uyuni Serves You The World’s Largest Natural Mirror

Have you ever experienced your reflection in a natural mirror right under the sun? No, then visit the Salar de Uyuni, in Southe west Bolivia, close to the crest of Andes, at an altitude of 3,650 meters. The stretch of salt extends to 4,085 square miles and is about 10 meters thick.

During the wet season, the salt stretch transforms into a natural mirror, since a sheet of water layer enables to reflect any image that falls on it. Most of the time, the sunny blue sky is apparently visible in the mirror that makes a stupendous spot for tourists from all round the world. LINK

Cal Orko: Dinousaur Dance Floor

Photo: jpspbj [Flickr]

An immense limestone wall in Cal Orko, Sucre, Bolivia, is home to a fantastic sight: thousands of dinosaur tracks made millions of years ago!

The immense Bolivian site is the rock face of an outcropping on a slant of 73 degrees, 80 meters high and 1.2 km long. There are more than 5,000 tracks of 294 different dinosaurs made during the second half of the Cretaceous period. [...] There is such an impressive amount of tracks that some of the researchers said this place seemed to be a dinosaurs’ dancefloor.
