Infinite Escher

You're watching video history! This film was created in 1990 by the Sony HDVS Soft Center to demonstrate the nascent High Definition Video technology. When this movie first debuted in the main store window of Sony Town in Akihabara, passers by would gasp in amazement at the clarity and sharp crisp focus of the picture.

Infinite Escher is a paean to German mathematician and artist [Edit: Dutch Graphic Designer] MC Escher. It stars a young Sean Ono Lennon as a teen who starts experiencing visions of various MC Escher paintings, drawings and mechanical draughts. How many MC Escher motifs can you count?

Although the special effects now seem passe, this video was truly cutting edge at release, a collaboration of avant gard industry artists: Directors John Sanborn, Mary Perillo, Dean Winkler; Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Art Direction by Nam June Paik. LINK: Youtube

National Geographic's New Infinite Photograph

Check out the video of this new Web app from National Geographic. It's called Infinite Photograph and is live today at www.ngm.com/infinite.

The browser-based program features stunning user-submitted photography from the natural world to create a massive As Seen on Earth photo mosaic that you can navigate by clicking on color patterns to create an infinite number of photograph mosaics. LINK: Youtube

That’s the idea behind the Infinite Photograph, a giant mosaic composed of some 300,000 photos submitted to National Geographic’s My Shot program. You click on the first image, then go deeper and deeper into the mosaic, and find mosaics within mosaics. Curiouser and curiouser. LINK: Neatorama
