Fantasmagorie

Fantasmagorie is an 1908 French animated film by Émile Cohl (born Émile Eugène Jean Louis Courtet). It is one of the earliest examples of traditional animation, and considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon. To make this film, Cohl placed each drawing on an illuminated glass plate and then traced the next drawing-with variations-on top of it until he had some 700 drawings.

In 1908, chalkboard caricaturists were common vaudeville attractions and the characters in the film look as though they've been drawn on a chalkboard, but it's an illusion. By filming black lines on paper and then printing in negative Cohl makes his animations appear to be chalk drawings. LINK: The Presurfer, Via: Youtube

Gettysburg 75th Anniversary

This is an incredibly interesting old film made in 1938 on the 75th anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg. It records some of the then still living survivors of that war. It's an amazing step back into history. Those old veterans gathered on that day in their own final years of life to remember those three days, July 1-3, 1863, where as young men they fought in one of the bloodiest battles of that war. It is a poignant visual reflection on the passage of time and how it heals all wounds. More Americans lost their lives in that war than have died in all the wars we have fought in since then.

Remembering our history is important. Someone once said that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to live it over and over again. If you are moved by this short film use it as an opportunity to learn more about this battle and the history of the CIvil War. In two more years we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg. America is what it is as much for the experience of the Civil War as for that of the Revolutionary War. We are our history. LINK, Via: Youtube

Why We're Here: Twin Cities

With all the possibilities around the world, what is the “it” that keeps people here in the Twin Cities? We suspected the answer to the question "Why We're Here" was both simple and incredibly nuanced -- worthy of art. We took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities.

Why We're Here: Twin Cities is a six-minute film that explores what unites us, and unites us here, in the Twin Cities. Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn. Crazy Stop-Motion Video Made From Over 2,000 Lomo Film Photos and Super 8 Footage

This is one of those videos that'll make you feel all warm inside. Over 20 Lomographers (toy camera-shooting people) from London got together to create a stop-motion video, combining their various films and shots for what you can see here:

There's even some Super 8 video included, too! They all used LC-A+ cameras (which cost about $250 apiece), but different types of film, such as slide film which was later cross-processed, color negative and redscale for that gritty-yet-warm red negative look. Over 2,000 photos and two reels of 8mm film were shot to produce the video, which was shot all around central London. [Lomography], Via: Gizmodo, Via: Youtube
