Audie Murphy Video Tribute

Audie Leon Murphy (1925-1971)
America's Most Decorated Soldier of WWII

The video displays through still images Murphy's role as a National icon and legend.

Medal of Honor Citation:
"Second Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy, 01692509, 15th Infantry, Army of the United States, on 26 January 1945, near Holtzwihr, France, commanded Company B, which was attacked by six tanks and waves of infantry. Lieutenant Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to a prepared position in a woods while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him to his right one of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. Lieutenant Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, Lieutenant Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer which was in danger of blowing up any instant and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to the German fire from three sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate Lieutenant Murphy, but he continued to hold his position and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards only to be mowed down by his fire. He received a leg wound but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his company, refused medical attention, and organized the company in a counterattack which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire wiped out many of the enemy; he personally killed or wounded about 50. Lieutenant Murphy's indomitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his company from possible encirclement and destruction and enabled it to hold the woods which had been the enemy's objective." FRANK ZAPPA STATUE DEDICATION

“Some 70 years after Zappa grew up here (he lived for a time in the 4500 block of Park Heights Ave.), the dedication caps a series of events that started a decade ago in Lithuania. There, a Zappa fan club wanted to honor a 30-year career that included some 60 albums and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The fan club erected a statue of Zappa and raised money to donate a replica to Baltimore. The city considered several locations for the bust, including Fells Point and Mount Vernon, but settled on Highlandtown. When asked where the bust should be placed, Gail Zappa said she picked a library because her husband was a self-taught man who loved libraries. “He always said, ‘If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want to learn, go to a library,” she said. For Zappa’s family members, who have a tenuous connection to the city, the monument is a long-delayed acknowledgment of the rocker’s musical legacy.” LINK

Hundreds expected for LTD Motorcycle Tour honoring fallen area vets

By Leslie Ehrenberg

Appleton Press

It’s about honor. It’s about remembering. It’s also about fun.

The organizers of the 5th Annual LTD Motorcycle Memorial Tour are asking area Americans to come out and support the ride in honor of the three soldiers who lost their lives and all soldiers serving their country.

The ride begins in Montevideo with registration at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, and the tour stops in Morris at about 3 p.m.

The annual ride is in memory of Staff Sgt. David Day, Sgt. Jesse Lhotka and 1st Lt. Jason Timmerman, who died in Iraq on Feb. 21, 2005.

Chad Turner, president of the LTD event, noted the LTD ride has come to be known as one of the bigger events of the summer in this area.

“It is an opportunity for the public to confirm they haven’t forgotten the sacrifices of these three young men from Minnesota, and the many men and women who have served our country,” Turner said.

The first year, following the return of the area Guardsman from their first deployment to Iraq, 176 supporters participated in the ride.

The second and third years included about 650. 2009’s attendance was even better with approximately 750 people.

This year, since the local soldiers are home, they are planning for a phenomenal turnout of nearly 900.

“The route will be very similar to the previous years,” he said.

Riders will take off at 10 a.m. with their first drive through in Marshall around 11:30 a.m. After driving through Canby, the riders will stop in Madison at approximately 12:45 p.m. for dinner at the Madison TACC/Armory.

The ride continues through Ortonville at about 2:15 p.m., Clinton at 2:30 p.m. and Graceville at 2:40 p.m. The rider’s next stop will be in Morris at approximately 3:09 p.m.

The last drive through will be Holloway at approximately 4:25 p.m., and riders will reach their final destination in Appleton at approximately 4:30 p.m.

In Appleton, at Hering Avenue, the riders travel down Lhotka Avenue to Munsterman Street. They will then travel down Munsterman Street to the Swift County Fair Grounds for a meal and raffle drawing will be held.

The band Pandora will play for the public starting at 6:30 p.m. The concert is in the Chuck Brown Building. Those not on the LTD ride can attend the dance and will be charged admission.

For more information about the LTD Motorcycle Memorial Tour, check out the Web site www.ltdbikers.com, or contact Chad Turner at (320) 333-8615. LINK

Musicians Who Died in the Sky: A Tribute

This is a tribute to stars we no longer see but their voices will never die. They may have sang for years with many hits, or as in the case of Richie Valens, just starting out on their career. Whatever their life map was, they remain with us in the form of music. They may have died the same way but they were all very different in the way they entertained us.

The swing band musical Major, Glenn Miller became famous for his jazz band and the jiving swing sound was welcomed during WWII. As soon as you hear the music, you just find yourself tapping your feet, even if you are not a jazz fan.

December 1944 he was flying from Bedford in the UK to Paris, this trip was to entertain the American troops based there, sadly he never made it. LINK, Via: Youtube
