Why We're Here: Twin Cities

With all the possibilities around the world, what is the “it” that keeps people here in the Twin Cities? We suspected the answer to the question "Why We're Here" was both simple and incredibly nuanced -- worthy of art. We took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities.

Why We're Here: Twin Cities is a six-minute film that explores what unites us, and unites us here, in the Twin Cities. Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn. Rolling Shutter Effect

(YouTube link)

Have you ever seen an airplane propeller that looked like this? It’s called the rolling shutter effect {wiki}. A cell phone camera records what it sees by scanning from one side of the frame to the other (or top to bottom), and strange things happen when the scene you are shooting moves faster than the image scanner. Another video illustrates how the slow scanning process of a cell phone camera creates this effect. -Via: reddit, Via: Neatorama

Unusual Photo Made With a Pinhole Camera

A pinhole camera is the ultimate in simple photographic devices – a lightproof box with a small aperture (often literally a pinhole) and a bit of film or photo paper. The image above was made with such a camera.

In the foreground is the pointed roof of a house or small building. Behind that is… what???

The surprising answer is at the link, with further explanation here.

14 Cameras That Look Just Like Guns

Proving that expressions like 'point and shoot' are not just mere metaphor. Here are some examples in the history of camera design that have lead for one reason or another to items which look exactly like guns, from early experimental cameras to sniper style Paparazzi kit to toys.

A Voyeuristic Peek Outside Skywalker Ranch

You should watch this video for two reasons. One, it's gorgeous, filmed on the Canon 5D/7D dSLRs at 1080p. Two, it gives you a peek outside George Lucas' famed workshop, like a more romantic, landscape-focused version of Cribs. [PhilipBloom / Planet5D], LINK, Via: Vimeo

Amazing Nostalgic Photography

Wendy Bevan is a fashion photographer. But she doesn't use £2K Canon DSLRs and arrays of flashguns. She shoots on good old Polaroid, and styles in shades of circus-burlesque. Kind of a paradox, since fashion is all about bleeding edge newness, and all of her photos look like they've been stored in an attic for sixty years. Somehow though, it works, and it's wonderful.

Her latest shoot, for Italian Marie Claire, is called English Party. Have a browse.

New Shock-proof Video Camera Likes Rough Adventures, POV-Style

The camera records up to 8GB of video (with an SDHC card), its focal length is at 2.97mm, and the wide-angle lens takes in 110-degree views.

But what's interesting for a camera of this type is that it also has a wireless control and a live-view LCD in an additional mounted player, which means you can check on videos in the middle of a ski run. LINK
