Stages of a Multi-Dimensional Woodcarving, by Scott McNeill

"QUOTE" This sculpture started as the question, "Would it be possible to express a perspective that could see everything, everywhere at the same time?"

First, I would need to carve an ordinary environment of distinct linear perceptions. I.E.-'this is what he sees, that is what she sees, etc.' In this sculpture, each carved section represents what one of the characters from another section sees (example: the rhino, a guy viewing artwork and the corner of a woman's face is what the man, in the upper left section sees; the rhinoceros sticking his head through the window (lower right) sees the lion and the same guy viewing artwork but from a different angle , and so on). Death Star Melons

People do some strange things when they have time to kill. Making the Death Star out of a cantaloupe or watermelon is one of the cooler (but still ever so slightly strange) things.

You were told as a child to never play with your food but, to be frank, sometimes when a cool idea suddenly hits, the temptation is just too strong. So, you take a watermelon. You just can’t help noticing that it already kinda looks like the Death Star. It doesn’t look quite right on a plate, though. Time to experiment.

10 Stunning Pumpkin Carvings

It's time to break out the carving knives and head to the pumpkin patch to select this year's victim. Just whittling the basic eyes, nose and mouth is a big task. Luckily, there are a few experts out there that can carve a jack-o-lantern like nobody's business.

Take a look to see how these pros transformed ordinary pumpkins into masterpieces - including a dead-ringer for the Statue of Liberty and a collection of Star Wars characters. LINK

Watermelon Carving Art

Hotel chef Takashi began carving melons in 2001 after being inspired while on holiday in Thailand. He has carved flowers, figurines and even a portrait.

“Anyone can learn to carve the melons and all it takes is a little patience. Because watermelons are colorful they are attractive and because it is one of the bigger fruits it allows me to make more powerful and interesting creations”.

Takashi often puts his work on display and the sculptures last about two days unless they are specially frozen….. In which case they can last for up to two weeks. LINK

Those works just look amazing… to see more, click here to visit Takashi’s website.

Fantastic Frigid and Fragile Sculptures of Snow

Far from child’s play that goes beyond the conventional carrot-nosed snowman, artists have long crafted chilly creations of snow sculptures. From small blocks of snow to epic proportions, transforming enormous snow blocks into larger than life masterpieces of an ethereal nature, some top the scales at 20 to 30 tons, measuring hundreds of feet in length.
Typically using nothing more than simple hand tools such as shovels, hatchets, and saws, snow sculptures and carvings are often created in full view of spectators, thus giving it kinship to performance art.

Winter festivals have prominently held snow sculpting competitions throughout the world in cold climes, most notably in Sapporo, Japan, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in China, the Quebec City Winter Carnival in Canada, and various other locations including Perm, Russia, and the U.S. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival in Minnesota is allegedly the oldest annual winter carnival in the world, with the first dating back to 1886.

Rock Carvings Document the Secret History of Aboriginal Contact with Outsiders

Photo: Rick Stevens

Hidden in the rugged hills of Arnhem, Australia, are stunning Aboriginal rock carvings that depict the history of Aboriginal contact with outsiders - from sailing ships to 19th-century steamships and even a World War II battleship!

Alongside exquisite rock art more than 15,000 years old are paintings that capture some of the 19th and 20th centuries’ most important technological innovations - a biplane, bicycle, car and rifle - as well as portraits of church ministers, sea captains and traders.
