Beautiful flowers? Not quite – they’re polymer pillars serendipitously photographed by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill:

The groovy flower pattern in this image actually came about by accident. Briana Whitaker and Briana Carstens of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, snapped this photograph as a quality-control step in their experiments to study the forces that cells, such as those that stitch together skin wounds, exert. They visualize these forces by watching how forests of 10-micrometer-tall polymer pillars bend when they place the cells on top of them. Ideally, the pillars should stand straight up, but on this occasion, as in the image, most of the pillars have fallen over, revealing a flower pattern.

American scientist finds the world's smallest orchid accidently

Call it luck or something else, an American scientist named Lou Jost has discovered the smallest orchid in the world by accident.

Discovery of an American scientist Lou Jost, the tiny flower was found accidently among the roots of a larger plant that he had collected from the Cerro Candelaria reserve in the eastern Andes. The width of 2.1mm accounts in making this newly discovered specie world’s smallest orchid ever found.

Lavender - it looks gorgeous and it has all sorts of medicinal uses. If you can, try and avoid humming dilly, dilly while you read through this article, but to be honest, now I have put the tune in your head, you may well find that impossible.

The Bird of Paradise Without Wings

Back in 1773 there was a buzz at the Royal Gardens of Kew. The Director, Sir Joseph Banks was about to introduce a new flower to the collection and he had named it after the Queen of the time. Queen Charlotte was the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz so this exotic new addition was called Strelitzua reginae in her honor. To the inhabitants of eighteenth century England the flower, then, represented the epitome of courtly glamour and its appearance was key to its instant success. However, it was to become best known by its common name - the bird-of-paradise flower. It is easy to see why. LINK

I captured this shot by following the Butterfly around until he finally landed. I was persistent. Was taken by a local store in there flower bed area.

Skateboard Flower

Ted Hunter of Roarockit Skateboard Co. made this flower sculpture with skateboards as petals titled "Reach for Light":

It’s a good example of free hand vacuum veneer bending. The flower petal designs are actually printed using photo’s of real tulip petals. The inside is printed griptape (sticky back sandpaper) and the outside is printed styrene. The internal core is Canadian maple veneer. The shape of the decks are our Roarockit classic pintail skateboard shape that is included in our longboard deck kits.
