Is it possible for art to be creepy and cute at the same time? Certainly when you see the porcelain art of Kate MacDowell in to account you are struck by two things. There is an breathtaking beauty in her attention to detail of our animal friends. Yet, many of the animals that she portrays are distinctly dead – already on the slab and undergoing a porcelain necropsy.
When you think about it our relationship with nature goes back way before human history – cave paintings drawn by prehistoric people in what they no doubt did not refer to as their leisure time show our intimacy with the natural world. Tens of thousands of years later MacDowell extends that tradition.
Yet all those many thousands of years ago we hunted and we gathered. We retain a rather idealistic impression of our union with nature in an age when our impact on our environment has never been so great or so harmful. MacDowell’s pieces reflect this dichotomy – we are the ultimate environmental stressor. We pollute, change the climate and introduce GM crops. LINK: kuriositas

The way in which shoots are arranged on plant stems also seems to be in accordance with the Fibonacci series. Compared with the one beneath it, each shoot is offset so that it does not shade its neighbor. The angle between one shoot and the next, expressed as a fraction of the circumference of the stem, is generally found to be given by two numbers from the Fibonacci series: ½ for grasses and for elm and linden trees; 1/3 for sedges, beech, and hazel; 2/5 for oak and fruit trees; 3/8 for poplar and rose; 5/13 for willows, almond trees, and leeks.

Austin-based artist Shawn Smith creates 3D sculptures that look like pixelated images. He slices sheets of plywood into 3/4 inch cubes, dyes them, and then glues them together. Smith writes:
For the past few years, I have been creating a series of “Re-things.” These whimsical sculptures represent pixilated animals and objects of nature. I find images of my subjects online and then create three-dimensional sculptural representations of these two-dimensional images. I build my “Re-things” pixel by pixel to understand how each pixel plays a crucial role in the identity of an object. Through the process of pixilation, color is distilled, some bits of information are lost, and the form is abstracted. Making the intangible tangible, I view my building process as an experiment in alchemy, using man-made composite and recycled materials to represent natural forms.

Artist Ron Pippin creates sculptures of animals with mechanical augmentations, such as the above work entitled “Solar Deer”. In an interview, Pippin said:
My work is often related to ideas about the relationship of Science, Art, and Nature. My scientific aesthetic is primarily drawn from the 19th Century, when, I feel, science still had a relationship to beautiful forms.
