1929 Car, In Storage for Nearly 50 Years, Cranks on First Attempt

A rare 1929 Austin 12/4, kept in storage since 1961, was found in the personal effects of its late owner:

Mr Bulled, 63, said he discovered the old car whilst going through his father’s possessions shortly after his death in 2008.

He was too frightened to start the engine up fully in case it ruined the car, but is now putting it up for sale to allow an expert to restore it fully and hopefully get it onto the road.

He said: “I pumped up the tyres and they stayed up. The rubber is cracked but the inner tubes are obviously still intact, which is remarkable really.

“And the engine turned over when we tried it with the starter handle, but I didn’t try to start her up in case I did any damage but I’m sure it would go.

9 Very Rare (and Very Expensive) Video Game Cartridges

You may recall the story of the guy who sold the Nintendo game Stadium Events for $41,300. Other old video games can be sold for ridiculous amounts not because of any intrinsic value, but because of their documented rarity. For example, a cartridge containing Nintendo Campus Challenge is the only existing copy.

In the early 1990s, Nintendo held competitions on college campuses and at popular Spring Break destinations. Like the World Championships, players had six minutes to play for high scores on demo versions of Super Mario Bros. 3, PinBot, and Dr. Mario.

Most copies of the game were destroyed after the competition ended, but one Nintendo employee kept his cart and sold it to Rob Walters at a garage sale in 2006.

Buy an inch of land in Detroit

Today at Institute for the Future, Jerry Paffendorf is telling us about Loveland, his art/game/activism project to sell real land in Detroit, Michigan inch-by-inch, for $1/inch. He already sold the first "colony," a 10,000 square inch grid called Plymouth. He's now selling deeds Via: Kickstarter to the second property, which will be called either Recovery or Hello World. The second property hasn't been purchased yet, so Jerry calls the investments "ghost inches." When you purchase an inch, you get a nice little deed package containing a magnifying glass to better survey your territory. The little money from deed sales goes back into the project. He also hopes to use the "profits" to provide microgrants to other innovative urban development projects in the city. From the Loveland project:

Yarr! Black Pearl for Sale!

A group of men wanted to build a copy of the famous "Black Pearl", not only as it used to look but also with the same materials and in the same place where this famous ship was built 338 years ago! The wood used included the Santa Maria wood for the frame and the Pine for the sheathing. The Black Pearl was constructed according to a primitive drawing by one of the sea robbers, who was sailing this ship. A lot of time was spent drawing and designing the ship, constructing and paying attention to all the details to preserve the original look of the vessel.
