The Grand Rapids LipDub (NEW WORLD RECORD)

"The Grand Rapids LipDub Video was filmed May 22nd, with 5,000 people, and involved a major shutdown of downtown Grand Rapids, which was filled with marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire, and helicopter take offs. It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date.

This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a "dying city." Longtime Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell inspires ArtPrize painting

GRAND RAPIDS -- Jerry Douglas never has been a big baseball fan.

Lucky for him, Ernie Harwell transcended sports.

Douglas, an artist from Boyne City, has ventured to ArtPrize 2010 with his oil painting "Voice from the Shadows," a 7-foot image depicting Harwell, the late longtime Detroit Tigers radio broadcaster, looking down from his announcer's booth over the players and fans in old Tiger Stadium.

The painting is on display at God's Kitchen, 303 S. Division Ave. LINK

A Robot That Moves Like A Snake

The OmniTread robot was built by engineering students at the University of Michigan. Its body consists of seven segments connected by pneumatic bellows. Treads on all four sides of the segments give it traction against surfaces, and the connecting bellows can inflate or deflate to provide stiffness or flexibility as needed. The robot can squeeze through a four-inch hole or ascend a vertical tube.

U.S. archeologists find possible mastodon carving on Lake Michigan rock

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - They aren't certain, but underwater archeologists say they may have discovered a boulder with a prehistoric carving in Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay.

The granite rock has markings that resemble a mastodon - an elephant-like creature that once inhabited parts of North America - with what could be a spear in its side, say divers who have seen it.

They came across the boulder at a depth of about 12 metres while searching for shipwrecks in June, said Mark Holley, a scientist with the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve Council.

Shark found in Lake Michigan

Rich Fasi was boating in West Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan near Traverse City, Michigan on Wednesday. He saw some tangled fishing equipment floating by and started pulling it from the water:

“I could see a fish down there about three feet down, but the last thing I expected was a shark on the end,” Fasi said.

There aren’t any witnesses, but Fasi, of Traverse City, said he pulled the roughly 2-foot shark from the bay about 100 yards west of Clinch Park Marina at about 5 p.m. He found the shark in about 25 feet of water, he said. It was dead, but wasn’t frozen.

“I could wiggle its tail, pry open its mouth, look at its teeth,” he said. “It didn’t look like it had any decomposition.”

Fasi threw the fish in his freezer and called the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Seven boys play big Harmonica (Feb, 1932)

Seven boys are needed to play a huge harmonica recently demonstrated at Detroit, Mich., and which is declared to be the largest of its kind in the world. It measures eight feet in length, giving sufficient space for each performer to render the part assigned to him in music orchestrated especially for the big instrument. There are 770 notes in all on the scale of the gigantic mouth organ.
Remember this was back in 1932. Sure had some interesting instruments back then. LINK
