THE APPLE TOMATO?
“The appearance of the humble apple pie is about to be transformed after the world’s first red-fleshed apple went on sale in Britain. Like many other apples, the new Redlove variety has a bright red skin on the outside but is unique as it has the same color running right through to the core. The rosy-red hue maintains its striking color while being eaten and even after being cooked and pressed. This means the contents of a traditional apple pie will now take on more of a pinky-red look while a pint of cider will resemble a glass of Ribena. The new fruit is not only said to be extremely tasty – it has a ‘berry nuance’ – it is even healthier than your average apple as its colorful flesh is richer in antioxidants. A grower has spent the last 20 years painstakingly breeding the new fruit. He has used natural cross-pollination techniques involving an number of ‘parent’ trees before finally coming up with the Redlove variety.” w/ photos. LINK

Girl grows two new kidneys after old ones fail
A girl left seriously ill when both her kidneys failed astounded medical experts by growing two new ones. Angel Burton from Louth, Lincolnshire, suffered from painful kidney infections from birth to the point where she required surgery at the age of five.
But surgeons were amazed to discover the little girl had four kidneys, with two new fully formed organs sitting on top of her old ones. And the new ones had taken over the role of the others, meaning she was effectively 'cured' of kidney failure.
Now, three years on, Angel, now eight, is fighting fit and her family are still thankful for the miracle that changed her life. She has an rare condition known as 'duplex kidney' - common to just a handful of people in Britain.
A duplex kidney is fused to the other at the centre and may share or have an independent ureter draining urine to the bladder. In Angel's case both her kidneys are 'duplex' and fused to the other. Each has a separate ureter, meaning that she has four kidneys and four ureters. LINK

Manga Farming
Want an earth friendly way to upcycle old manga or maybe even telephone books! How about using them to grow radish or other sprouts, like this project by Japanese artist Koshi Kawachi. It would make in interesting conversation piece. My only concern would be that the book might get moldy after a few days, but perhaps you could transplant them into a pot or garden.

Digg CEO Adelson out, Kevin Rose steps up
Update from Jay
Hey all,
Got some news. After five years, forty million users, and an amazing
ride, I've decided to step down as CEO of Digg. With the new Digg
getting ready to launch, Digg Ads doing well, our sales force growing,
our hiring ramping, and the company maturing well beyond its startup
phase, I feel that now is the right time.
The entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some
new business ideas over the next twelve months. As the economy exits
a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new
companies to develop. Of course, I will continue to serve as an
adviser to Digg. In the interim, Kevin has agreed to step in as
Chairman and CEO.
I'd like to thank Kevin, the Digg staff and the Digg community for
their support, insight and, most of all, their loyalty in turning Digg
into the force that it is today.
-Jay
Update from Kevin:
I want to be the first to thank Jay for the last five years of amazing
work. You've been a great friend and mentor, we wouldn't be where we
are today if it wasn't for you.
While I'll miss working with Jay day-to-day I am excited to be taking on
the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our
promise to enable social curation of the world's content and the
conversation around it. We've been super busy on the product side
getting ready for the upcoming Digg redesign and delivering our mobile
apps for the iPhone and Android.
Thank you very much for your on-going support of Digg, I'm truly
excited about the next five years, big things coming!
-Kevin

Trees Growing Around Objects
When a tree is growing, and it encounters something that gets in the way of it's growth, it can do three things: stop growing, grow away from it, or grow around it. Is it possible there are items entirely consumed by trees that we don't know about?
Here are 22 examples of trees simply absorbing obstacles. LINK

Pensioner grows new skull
A pensioner whose skull was removed after an accident in the 1950s astounded doctors by growing a new one.
Gordon Moore, 72, had worn a metal plate to protect his brain for more than 50 years after he was involved in a car crash.
But when surgeons removed the titanium plate to treat an infection, they were astonished to find the had grown a new skull underneath.
A skull growing back is so rare there are no records on the number of times it has happened.
The whole smashed front section of Gordon's skull, from his eye to his ear, backwards to the top of his head, has regenerated.
It is understood there has been only one other discovery like this in the world. LINK

Stones That Grow By Themselves
Romania may be known as the land of Dracula, heaped with bloodthirsty vampires and other creatures shaped by Hollywood imagination, but it is also a land where nature has had an interesting activity. Link, Via: UniqueDaily
