Fiona Krüger: Memento Mori

Fiona Krüger, a recent graduate of ECAL/university of arts and design lausanne from the master in luxury industry and design has created 'Memento Mori' for her thesis project. the timepiece reinterprets the theme of mortality in watch-making. The luxury watch appreciates both the mexican imagery of dia de los muertos and the 17th century watch of mary queen of scotts with a human skull detailed with decorative, gold metalwork. The skeletal form of the the faceplate is formed by layering, by which the intricate nature of a mechanical watch is reinforced. The case is fashioned from solid silver and mineral hand cut glass and is engraved by hand as well. The dial is made from gold and rhodium plated brass which has been laser cut and engraved. Blued steel hands of the clock move by a ETA 2824 mechanism over the skull watch face. 'Momento Mori' is fastened to one's wrist by a blued calf leather band with a silver buckle. LINK

Human skull found in Minnehaha Park from 19th Century

A human skull found in a Minneapolis park earlier this month is likely a middle-aged man from the 19th century. WCCO reports a Hennepin County forensic team says the skull found in Minnehaha Park’s off-leash dog is that of a man who was of both European and African ancestry. LINK

Steampunk Biomech Bronze Skull

It’s not everyday that sculpture and biomechanics merge. But the Biomech Bronze Skull design has done exactly that.

Thanks to his knowledge of human anatomy, biomechanics, and an unmatched passion for sculpture art, Christopher Conte has been creating unique art pieces like an articulated arm, a carbon fiber spider, etc.; and this biomechanical bronze skull seems to be a high-tech addition to his ever expanding repertoire.

Measuring 6.5cm x 9cm x 9cm, the skull is made using casted hand-finished and machined bronze, along with some components built in aluminum and stainless steel.

Despite it being detailed and intricately built, the skull can’t be called anything else but grotesque. However, if you still want to bring home this freaky futuristic skull, be sure to find a proper place to display it as many among your friends and family may despise it! LINK: Walyou

Snake Skeletons

The typical Ophidian skull is characterized by a solidly ossified brain-case, with the distinct frontals and the united parietals extending downwards to the basisphenoid, which is large and produced forward into a rostrum extending to the ethmoidal region. The nasal region is less completely ossified, and the paired nasals are often attached only at their base. The occipital condyle is either trilobate and formed by the basioccipital and the exoccipitals, or a simple knob formed by the basioccipital; the supraoccipital is excluded from the foramen magnum. The basioccipital may bear a strong, curved ventral process or hypapophysis, in the Vipers.” LINK

Wasted Youth Shelf Skull Art Is Music To The Eyes Read more: Wasted Youth Shelf Art Is Music To The Eyes

Sometimes cleanliness freaks and people who spend hours putting things in order can end up being accidental artists, like James Hopkins here who has created an awesome display case called ‘Wasted Youth’ with disco balls, speakers, wine bottles, a stupefying globe and a rather dull-looking clock, among a dozen other junk items. The end product, of course, has turned out to be a strange, yet attractive skull head (look closer!). For others, it might be the next best thing to the Great Wall of China and for James it is ‘Wasted Youth’, but for us it is ‘music to the eyes’.

One of James’ older works had been showcased last year and ‘Wasted Youth’ is a continuation of the same series. What is baffling (if accidental, really) of course is the fact that every element in the shelf found its perfect position during a ‘reorganization drive’. Well, that certainly gives us a few ideas on putting our junkyard stuff to good use. You never know, the world’s best artists might find their match after all. LINK

Sculptures By The Sea

“A gigantic version of Damian Hirst’s skull is nestled in the sand. An oversized baby – its modesty carefully covered by officials – is wide-eyed and lost. And an enormous pair of eyes stare out at onlookers from a cliff face. Sculpture by the Sea’ has returned to Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The festival, now in its thirteenth year, comprises Australia’s largest annual outdoor public display of art. Up to half a million people are expected to walk the two kilometres of Sydney’s iconic beaches to gawp at the open-air exhibition.” LINK, Via: Mailonline

Pensioner grows new skull

A pensioner whose skull was removed after an accident in the 1950s astounded doctors by growing a new one.

Gordon Moore, 72, had worn a metal plate to protect his brain for more than 50 years after he was involved in a car crash.

But when surgeons removed the titanium plate to treat an infection, they were astonished to find the had grown a new skull underneath.

A skull growing back is so rare there are no records on the number of times it has happened.

The whole smashed front section of Gordon's skull, from his eye to his ear, backwards to the top of his head, has regenerated.

It is understood there has been only one other discovery like this in the world. LINK

Miraculous escape for duck shot through the head with nail gun

A duck had to undergo emergency surgery after surviving for several days with a 4in nail embedded in its skull. The bird, called Tully by vets, had been shot through the head with a nail gun.

But it took rescuers three days to capture the creature, who had the nail sticking out from both sides of its head. The duck was then rushed for emergency surgery at a vets in Devon Meadows, Victoria, in Australia.

After giving Tully an anaesthetic, vets were able to remove the nail which had pierced his head just 4mm from an eye. Nigel Williamson, 43, from Australian Animal Rescue, was eventually able to catch him after a concerned member of the public raised the alarm.

'He didn't seem bothered about it at all but in his healthy state it meant he was still very hard to get hold of. LINK
