You have probably seen taxidermy and steampunk art before, but have you ever seen them combined?
Lisa Black, a talented young artist from New Zealand, creates the most amazing works of art, by adding cool steampunk elements, like gears, screws, and other metal pieces, to taxidermy animals. This unusual combination creates unique art pieces that are absolutely amazing. LINK

Steampunk Biomech Bronze Skull
It’s not everyday that sculpture and biomechanics merge. But the Biomech Bronze Skull design has done exactly that.
Thanks to his knowledge of human anatomy, biomechanics, and an unmatched passion for sculpture art, Christopher Conte has been creating unique art pieces like an articulated arm, a carbon fiber spider, etc.; and this biomechanical bronze skull seems to be a high-tech addition to his ever expanding repertoire.
Measuring 6.5cm x 9cm x 9cm, the skull is made using casted hand-finished and machined bronze, along with some components built in aluminum and stainless steel.
Despite it being detailed and intricately built, the skull can’t be called anything else but grotesque. However, if you still want to bring home this freaky futuristic skull, be sure to find a proper place to display it as many among your friends and family may despise it! LINK: Walyou

Steampunk Racer has High-Wheeling Style
Bicycles and steampunk are two concepts that are rarely combined, but work very well together, as shown by this steampunk-style racing bike.
The steampunk genre has a fairly long and interesting history, from the speculative sci-fi novels of the mid-1900s to the steampunk appreciation societies found worldwide today. The bike, however, has an even longer history, starting from the dawn of the 19th century. The most popular design eventually became the penny-farthing – a very distinct bike boasting an enormous front wheel. Modern bicycles look very different from these high-wheelers, but we have all seen penny-farthings in cartoons and movies illustrating life at the end of the 19th century.
The Steampunk Racer was made for a 12-inch bike charity race held in Holland, and not surprisingly, it was awarded for having the best technical construction. This innovative design is inspired by the penny-farthing, but actually has three wheels instead of the usual two. Don’t think that this is your baby sister’s trike, though – this massive racer can seat three people and probably requires at least two just to get it moving. The steampunk influence is obvious but subdued compared to other steampunk items we have featured, like the underwater explorer’s helmet and the massive organ-computer. The organic arch of the frame and the rusty brass that makes up the body of the trike look like it could have easily come out of Victorian era Britain. There’s even an old-fashioned lantern hanging on the front, in case the modern-looking reflector doesn’t do the job. LINK: Walyou

Steampunk Professor Xavier Wheelchair
One of the most easily recognizable icons in western comic book culture is Professor Charles Xavier, a bald man in a wheelchair. Often, the design for the wheelchair is pretty cool; but a fan and artist by the name of Daniel Valdez decided he would do something incredibly unique — he decided to create a Steampunk Professor Xavier and a wheelchair to boot.
The wheelchair from Smeeon is actually an Eastlake Victorian Rocker which has been heavily modded to give it the authentic steampunk look and feel. Every detail from the controls to the seat design, from the pistons to the finish, and everything in between really gives this wheelchair a genuine steampunk feeling to it.
The color scheme is very reminiscent of a Victorian noble, and the wheelchair is controlled by a control panel, similar to the electric wheelchairs we have now, except it is designed to look like it is powered by steam. In fact, the appearance of steam-power is included in the design, as there is a smokestack which produces steam.
The design is definitely very cool, and as a steampunk concept much like the others… It’s simple. It’s appealing. And it is most certainly tried, tested, and true.

Alex sez, "OMFSM this is made of awesome: Jer Faludi's pictures of a little-known Steampuck/Recycloart masterpiece, the Forevertron."
Dr. Evermor's Forevertron: best steampunk sculpture EVER. Yes, ever. Including all the great stuff at Burning Man. This guy wins. You've just never seen it, because it's in semi-rural Wisconsin (here). It's also the biggest scrap-metal sculpture in the world, so he wins the stuff-recycled-into-art prize, too. LINK: Boingboing

Working steampunk firearms
Jamie sez, "Denver artist Jonathan Alberico has created two fully functional steam punk guns. Black Betty, a dual barrel pistol uses flash paper to shoot fire balls. Doris is a beastly air cannon that fires bouncey ball at high enough speeds to rip through boxes and even bounce back and catch the videographer in the hip! Both pieces have corresponding youtube clips of them in action." LINK: Boingboing

A Visit to a Steampunked Home
Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum started ModVic (Modern Victorian) Home Restoration in June 2007 and have now moved onto steampunk Home Design. ModVic's mission is to authentically restore historic Victorian homes (1850 – 1910) to their original beauty and richness while completely modernizing the home’s systems, functional layout and conveniences for the family of today (sound familiar?). Bruce and Melanie also love the steampunk design aesthetic of combining the best of Victorian high design and craftsmanship with modern functionality and usefulness.
Bruce's home is a Craftsman style Victorian built in 1901. It has a great deal of history associated with it and Bruce has filled it with unusual Craftsman era antiques. But we're interested in steampunk here rather than the merely historical so I'm going to gloss over almost all of that and get to the mods and the steampunk art!
Be sure to go to the LINK this home is amazing.
