Hyperreal photoreal painting
On the Saturday arts and crafts market in San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza, there is an artist who paints and sells his work from inside a small cart. His specialty is making "photorealistic" reproductions of celebrity photos and passers-by. Based on the nude on the left though, it seems that some of his models may live in the Uncanny Valley. I rather like this artwork though and next time may ask if it's for sale. Click the image to see it larger. LINK: Boingboing

The cartoons of Abner Dean
"Abner Dean (1910 – 1982), born Abner Epstein, was an American cartoonist who was the nephew of sculptor Jacob Epstein. In allegorical or surrealist situations, Dean often depicted extremes of human behavior amid grim, decaying urban settings or barren landscapes. His artwork prompted Clifton Fadiman to comment, 'His pictures are trick mirrors in which we catch sight of those absurd fragments of ourselves that we never see in the smooth glass of habit.'"

Cool Ceramic Knives Display Cutting Edge Artwork
Minova-Cera (a division of TYK Corporation) is one of Japan's leading manufacturers of ceramic knives, trading on their location in Japan's famed "City of Blades". While Mino ware cutlery has been warmly received in kitchens throughout Japan and beyond, the company thought something was missing.
As Minova-Cera designer Tatsuya Kawai put it, "White alone is no fun," and he's since carried this theme forward to the production of new Minova-Cera knives with exquisite multi-colored artwork decorating their formerly plain white ceramic blades.
The patterns, which combine traditional and modern Japanese styles and subjects, are rendered in bright, glowing colors that remain colorfast throughout the life of each knife.
Minova-Cera decorative ceramic knives are now available, sold at a cost of 19,800 yen (around $240) each. The knives come in attractive and secure white packaging but a custom lacquered wood box is available at extra cost for those intent on presenting one of these heirloom quality knives as a gift. 12.5-MILE LONG DRAWING
“This spectacular artwork is the world’s largest drawing and at 12.5 square miles it would be able to find room for 4,469 Wembley soccer fields. Etched onto the surface of Lake Baikal, in Russia’s windswept and frozen Siberia, it was created by land artist extraordinaire Jim Denevan and his team in March of this year. Commissioned by clothing firm Anthropologie to create the work for their advertising tie-in series The Anthropologist, Jim, 49, spent 15 days on the surface of Lake Baikal completing the drawing.” LINK

The Artwork of Sarah King
Writers may use words to weave a work of literary art, but Sarah King did something else with them: she shapes them into wonderful illustrations!
Don’t Panic Magazine has a nifty interview with Sarah:
Inspired by science, space, animals and myths, Sarah’s illustrations are intricately beautiful and bursting with words.

Robert Connett’s Artwork
I can’t believe it took me this long to find the wonderful artwork of self-taught California artist Robert Connett. His surreal paintings are like a lot like H.R. Geiger’s if he had a dollop of humor.
