Fiona Krüger: Memento Mori

Fiona Krüger, a recent graduate of ECAL/university of arts and design lausanne from the master in luxury industry and design has created 'Memento Mori' for her thesis project. the timepiece reinterprets the theme of mortality in watch-making. The luxury watch appreciates both the mexican imagery of dia de los muertos and the 17th century watch of mary queen of scotts with a human skull detailed with decorative, gold metalwork. The skeletal form of the the faceplate is formed by layering, by which the intricate nature of a mechanical watch is reinforced. The case is fashioned from solid silver and mineral hand cut glass and is engraved by hand as well. The dial is made from gold and rhodium plated brass which has been laser cut and engraved. Blued steel hands of the clock move by a ETA 2824 mechanism over the skull watch face. 'Momento Mori' is fastened to one's wrist by a blued calf leather band with a silver buckle. LINK

This is a Watch, Believe it or Not

Despite the maker describing it as a "Horological Machine" and the thing looking like a miniature airplane that the dog got at, the MB&F HM4 Thunderbird is for telling the time with. It is a watch.

The left cylinder tells you how much power remains in its kinetic charger, while the right one tells you the time—in a surprisingly readable format, unlike some other high-concept nonsense we could mention.

Here's the full press release (LINK). It's a work of art in itself, and any press release that uses the word "transcendental " deserves the honor of being reproduced in full. [MB&F, Via: Slashgear], Via: Gizmodo

The Miracle Quartz: From Flint Ax to Precision Watch

The many and varies uses of quartz; from ancient to modern times.

It may seem a far cry from a Stone Age hunter’s flint ax to a precision watch with less variation than 0.1 second annually. But the prehistoric axmaker and the 20th century watch-maker used the same basic mineral: quartz.

..Cosmetic Quartz Silicon, a derivative of quartz is the main ingredient in most cosmetics. In hair gel it is the substance that fixed the hair in place, achieving dramatic results – as in the style favored by singer Tina Turner!

Highly Hackable TI Watch Used To Wirelessly Unlock Doors

The watch itself features integrated pressure and temperature sensors, a 3-axis accelerometer and 128-bit AES encrypted wireless. In this demo, the watch syncs with the receiver box mounted on the deadbolt. A sequence is tapped on the face of the watch—activating a servo inside the box that opens the door. Personally, I would prefer to open the door with my cellphone, but this looks to be a relatively secure and inexpensive solution comparably. If you want to try something like this yourself, the watch should be restocked on the Texas Instruments website soon. [Hack a Day, Via: Slashgear] Via: Gizmodo, Via: Youtube

Signs

Sometimes all you need is a sign. This short film by Australian Director Patrick Hughes has no dialogue at all but tells a story by which you cannot fail to be moved. A young man (Jason, we learn) is in a new job in the big city and is very lonely. That is until one day when... well, you will have to watch this unusual and touching romantic comedy for yourself. It's only eleven minutes long. Sit back and get your hankies out. LINK, Via: Youtube

Anatidaephobia

Anatidaephobia is the fear that a duck is watching you. The term was coined by Gary Larson, author of the comic The Far Side, who profited from ducks watching people. In these days of contextual advertising, the fear may be well-founded. Link to larger screenshot. Link to text article. -Via: Bits and Pieces, Via: Neatorama

Gigantic Polish Binary Clock

Like a giant Tokyo Flash watch, this binary clock installation at the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland, was erected by students hoping to promote the technical nature of their university. How noble.

The Big Binary Clock project displays the time using 18 round windows, with the green LEDs representing the hours, the blue representing the minutes, and the red the seconds. The time can be set remotely via Bluetooth, and an NXP ARM7 processor keeps it ticking over nicely. Certainly beats the usual "projects" students "erect" in US colleges.
