10 Huge Carved Stone Monuments

"The Confederate Memorial Carving"
Stone Mountain Park has the largest high-relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving. The carving honors three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.
The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee’s elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain’s. LINK

The Architectural Triumph of the Parthenon

The Parthenon in Athens, Greece is one of those places we all hope to see close up before we die. It’s an awe-inspiring monument of ancient Greece.

The Parthenon is a ruin to this day. Some of its sculptures were lost forever when collectors ransacked the site in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many more sculptures lie in museums throughout Europe.

..It was Pericles, leader of Athens from 461 to 429 B.C., who proposed building a majestic new temple to the city’s patron goddess. Athens was the center of an empire, and Pericles was determined that some visible symbol of its wealth and influence be erected. Not only would the new temple house a magnificent gold and ivory statue of Athena, it would also serve as the treasury of the empire.

Massive Monuments Sculpted In Situ

"Decebalus, Orsova"
The world never stands still and gigantic sculptures are still being teased from the rock. The former communist country of Romania is no exception and here they have chosen to honor Decebalus. Translating as "The Brave One" was a king of the Dacians and fought many a war against the Roman Empire. It is thought that the far more famous Spartacus was himself a Dacian, so you know now how tough these people were! The historian Iosif Constantin Drăgan funded twelve sculptors to the tune of over a million dollars. After ten years of hard graft it was completed in 2004. It stands opposite an almost two thousand year old plaque commemorating Roman victories against the Dacians. How is that for unequivocal defiance millennia later? LINK

10 Amazing Monuments to War Heroes

It was the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division that was charged with taking Mametz Wood during the bloody Battle of the Somme on July 7, 1916. After five long days they managed to clear the woods of Germans, which cost them 4,000 deaths and casualties. This is how the 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial erected, with a defiant dragon (the Red Dragon of Wales was the division’s insignia) standing on a 10 feet plinth, facing the woods with the regimental cap badge of the South Wales Borderers carved on one side of the base.
