New Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee

Artist Guy Laramee (previously) has recently completed a number of new sculptural works where he transforms thick tomes into incredible topographical features including mountains, caves, volcanoes, and even water. Many of the works are part of a new project titled Guan Yin, a series of work dedicated to the forces that enable individuals to endure grief and pain, or in his words “the mysterious forces thanks to which we can traverse ordeals.” If you happen to be near Quebec, a number of Laramee’s works are currently on view at Expression gallery in Saint-Hyacinthe through August 12.

Lion of Judah carved into Eastlake tree

What do you do when your beautiful old oak tree is struck by lightning? Have it carved into a ten-foot lion of course. At least that’s what Sandy River’s of Alabama has decided to do.

Four years ago, Rivers’ 100-year-old red oak tree was struck by lightning. But she couldn’t bear to let it die.

“They came out and they removed the limbs and everything. And they wanted to grind the tree down. But I couldn’t do that. Because this tree, it belongs here. And I feel a connection with this tree. And I’m all about nature. I guess that’s just the hippee in me,” joked Rivers.

A few years later, Rivers came across the wood work of Andy Cummings, a local artist known for his chainsaw artworks. The idea finally came to her like a roar in the night. The ten-foot stump would be transformed into a lion.

So far her neighbors seem excited about the rather large art piece in her front yard.

10 Huge Carved Stone Monuments

"The Confederate Memorial Carving"
Stone Mountain Park has the largest high-relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving. The carving honors three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.
The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee’s elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain’s. LINK

The Carved Leather of Mark Evans

Mark Evans carves images onto leather with knives. He’s deliciously unpretentious about his craft:

Art doesn’t get more primal than etching animal skins with a big knife. I don’t do ‘pseudo intellectual’ I make art.

And that’s it: no postmodern angst, no childhood issues. Just a guy with a knife and a sheet of leather. At the link, you’ll find a gallery of his amazingly-detailed work.

Subtle Sunken Beach House, Shipwreck or Ruin by the Sea?

Like a washed-up shipwreck or ancient waterside war fortress, this simple beach-front home by Izquierdo Lehmann in Chile seems very much a part of its environment – from the earth it is carved out of to the stacked stones that buttress the sides and keep the retaining walls from caving in. LINK

Wooden Carved Cars

“Gary recently showed his carved cars at the Dayton, Ohio, Concours d’Elegance at Carillon Park, and the feedback that he received from the attending public, fellow exhibiting artists and the Concours staff was ‘through the roof.’ Examine his work closely, and you’ll see why.” LINK: Unique Daily
