Polymer Flower
Image: Russell Taylor, Briana Whitaker and Briana Carstens /
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Beautiful flowers? Not quite – they’re polymer pillars serendipitously photographed by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill:
The groovy flower pattern in this image actually came about by accident. Briana Whitaker and Briana Carstens of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, snapped this photograph as a quality-control step in their experiments to study the forces that cells, such as those that stitch together skin wounds, exert. They visualize these forces by watching how forests of 10-micrometer-tall polymer pillars bend when they place the cells on top of them. Ideally, the pillars should stand straight up, but on this occasion, as in the image, most of the pillars have fallen over, revealing a flower pattern.

Waves by Daniel Palacios
Daniel Palacios took a piece of string and two motors and turn them into an amazing art installation:
‘Waves’ utilizes a basic construction of a long piece of elastic string and two motors to visualize the presence of people close to the installation. The string between the two motorized chambers reacts to the people presence and movements, it twirls to produce a sine-wave simulation that eloquently resembles both the digitization of real-time sound waves and patterns of flow and connectivity found in natural systems.

Rockabilly mandala record bowl in Boing Boing Bazaar
"QUOTE"
"Rockabilly" is an original mandala painting in sharp white, bright red, and glossy black on a recycled 12" vinyl record.
My record bowls are hand painted in original psychedelic patterns, heated, and lovingly sculpted into uniquely organic, flower-like forms. I seal up the spindle holes so the bowls are water tight and functional.
I use a semi-gloss polyurethane finish to protect the paint and make the bowls food safe. I leave the original record labels intact (and also sealed with polyurethane) on the bottom of each bowl - which record will YOU get?
Eye Pop Art bowls are fantastic for holding fruit, candy, candles, trinkets, or anything your heart desires. They are bright, colorful art objects to set on your coffee table. They are eco-friendly and make a great conversation piece! Surprise your guests when you tell them to flip the bowl over and see the very interesting recycled material that it was made from!
This handpainted "Rockabilly mandala record bowl" is $62 the Makers Market / Boing Boing Bazaar. Via: Boingbnoing

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation
The Garden of Cosmic Speculation was created by Charles Jencks and Maggie Keswick in Dumfries, Scotland in 1989. It contains unusual geometric patterns in order to inspire the mind. The mound pictured above was designed around the Fibonacci sequence. This is a private garden and open to the public only one day a year.

Mysterious 'crop circles' appear on ice in Norway
77-year -old Ole Johan Hansen from Arna, outside Bergen in the west of Norway, saw a mystic light out on the lake one evening, about 6ft wide, unlike anything he had seen before.
He could see no one with his binoculars, and due to the risk of falling through the ice, did not investigate until the next day.
The following day, a strange, symmetric pattern covered the lake.

Video of artist Chris Piascik at work
A lovely video of Chris Piascik at work. "Chris explains that these doodles start with him randomly scribbling out a loopy pattern and then filling it in."
