Watermelon Carving Art

Hotel chef Takashi began carving melons in 2001 after being inspired while on holiday in Thailand. He has carved flowers, figurines and even a portrait.

“Anyone can learn to carve the melons and all it takes is a little patience. Because watermelons are colorful they are attractive and because it is one of the bigger fruits it allows me to make more powerful and interesting creations”.

Takashi often puts his work on display and the sculptures last about two days unless they are specially frozen….. In which case they can last for up to two weeks. LINK

One Heck of a Giant Stingray

A stingray weighing close to 900 pounds? This 6.6-ft.-wide giant stingray was caught, measured and released in Thailand this week, part of a National Geographic scientific expedition to search for giant fish. It may well be the largest known freshwater fish in the world.

Freshwater giant stingrays are among the largest of the approximately 200 species of rays. They are found in just a few rivers in Southeast Asia and northern Australia.

Bottle Temple in Thailand

Wat Pa Maha Kaew Temple is the only temple in the world build out of glass bottles and bottle caps. It all began in 1984 when the Buddhist monks started gathering bottles to decorate their shelters. The lovely bottle art-work they created attracted more and more visitors that began donating bottles, until there were enough to build an entire building.

Translated as “Temple of Million Bottles” Wat Pa Maha Kaew is located in Siasaket province, about 370 miles northeast of Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok. There are approximately 1,5 millionglass bottles incorporated in the temple complex,that includes glass shelters, crematorium and even glass toilets.

The bottles make for a surprisingly easy to maintain building material, they let the light in and they don’t fade. The monks are still collecting glass bottles to build even more structures at Wat Pa Maha Kaew. LINK

Conjoined Fish

Meet Thailand's easy-riding biker frog

Mrs Bamroongtoi came across Nong Oui outside her house in the Thai province of Roi-Et.

"The frog had a small chick in its mouth. I looked her straight in the eye and knew I could communicate with her. I told her to drop the chick and she did and then came hopping in," she claimed.

"Ever since, she has been a member of the family. For a long time, villagers would come round and get tips on the National Lottery with the frog's help. They used to read her skin.
This is "Nong Oui", Thailand's amphibian answer to the Hell's Angels.

There is nothing the black-spotted frog likes better than taking her Harley out for a spin - even if she is a bit of a poseur.

But, tragically for bikers and frog-lovers everywhere, Nong Oui's owner Tongsai Bamroongtai, 52, says she has now been grounded - because she can no longer predict winning National Lottery numbers.
