Water Drop Falling In Front Of MC Escher Print

These are actual photographs of water droplets falling in front of a print of MC Escher's iconic 'Relativity'. There's a shot of the reddit photographer Smsilton's setup after the jump if you want to see how it was made, which, amazingly, didn't involve trapping a wizard in an hourglass and forcing him to freeze time. Water Drops Orbiting a Needle in Space

(Video Link) Don Pettit, an astronaut and science educator whose work we’ve featured extensively on Neatorama, is now on the International Space Station. For his most recent demonstration, Pettit charged knitting needles with static electricity and then shot water drops at them. The drops, attracted by the charge, orbited the needles. Water Droplet Bouncing on a Superhydrophobic Carbon Nanotube Array

The first two parts of the video show the impact dynamic of 30 microliters water
droplet at different impact velocity. At low impact velocity of 1.03 m/s, the water droplet deforms upon impact and eventually bounces off completely of the surface of the array. At higher impact velocity of 2.21 m/s, the droplet breaks up into many smaller droplets and eventually bounces off completely of the surface of the array.

All parts of the video were captured by high speed camera operated at
various frame rates. The droplet was illuminated from behind with a diffuse
halogen light. The droplet was dropped on the surface by at-tipped needle
and the volume of the droplet was controlled precisely by syringe pump.

This work was supported by The Charyk Foundation and The Fletcher Jones Foundation.

I Never Thought Water Drops Looked Like This

I'm flabbergasted, dumbfound, and mindboggled. In fact, my whole mind is a bag of bbggglll after watching this high speed video of water drops falling. It's unbelievable how high speed photography can change your perception of the world.

There's nothing special in this video. No special water or additives. It's just that the world gets absolutely crazy at 2,000 frames per second. LINK, Via: Youtube
