The Oldest Naval Vessel in Active Service
The US Navy has the frigate Constitution, launched in 1797. The British Royal Navy has the Victory, which dates even further back — to 1765. But both of these vessels are museum ships, rather than truly active vessels.
The oldest naval vessel in active service is the VMF Kommuna, a Russian Navy salvage ship built in 1915. James Dunnigan writes for Strategy Page:
This 2,500 ton catamaran was built in the Netherlands and entered service in 1915. Kommuna began service in the Czar’s navy, spent most of its career in the Soviet (communist) Navy, and now serves in the fleet of a democratic Russia. Originally designed to recover submarines that had sunk in shallow coastal waters, Kommuna remains in service to handle smaller submersibles, does it well and has been maintained over the decades to the point where it cheaper to keep the old girl operational, than to try and design and build a replacement.

Seized Weapons Caches
"Mexican Cartel Weapons"
When you think of a weapons cache, warzones like Afghanistan tend to come to mind. While you’ll find plenty of mines, rifles and explosives there, plenty of Americans are also being caught with arms caches on what seems like a weekly basis. Take for instance, the weapons seized from an Australian biker gang. The amount of available firepower looks like more than enough to take out a small country, let alone a rival gang.
Luckily for us, the proper law enforcement agencies have gotten to these dangerous weapons before they’ve had a chance to inflict damage. LINK

Ed McMahon Dead at 86
Longtime Johnny Carson sidekick and TV host Ed McMahon died in his sleep early Tuesday morning at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Although no official cause of death is known yet, the man who sat by Carson’s side on “The Tonight Show” from 1962 to 1992 -- and who created the iconic phrase “Heeeeeeere’s Johnny!” -- has had a number of health problems recently. He had been hospitalized with pneumonia and battled bone cancer.LINK

‘WTF Were They Thinking’ Tattoos
Some of them aren’t half bad. But if the Internet is evidence of anything, there are a hell of a lot more hilariously horrible tattoos out there than anyone would like to admit. A list of 210 at the LINK.
The Face in Hogenakkal Falls

Neatoramanaut Debashish Paul took a photo of a section of Hogenakkal Falls in South India that has a face of a mustachiod man. I know, I know, it’s just pareidolia (the tendency of human brains to see familiar images and faces in objects), but it’s still very cool!

M11X’s vinyl stereo chairs
These stylish works by New York-based artist, M11X — aka Mikal Hameed — blend his musical history with his creative nature as he ‘calls on us to forget our indivualized nature and relationship with our headphones and demands that we start to share our music as it was meant to be: unplugged and free’. Last of Tiger Stadium destroyed
Michigan and Trumbull is missing an old friend as crews raised most of the remaining Tiger Stadium on Monday.
The stadium's upper deck, which had remained mostly in tact, collapsed around 2:30 p.m.
Freep.com, June 22: Witnesses said the first base portion of the structure began peeling away, and then the rest of the upper deck quickly collapsed upon itself.
The result is a massive pile of rubble, including the roof, twisted steel and concrete chunks.
A preservation group earlier this month attempted to postpone the final demolition, but a judge ruled against the delay and the razing resumed. LINK
There are some very touching comments. So be sure to go to the link and read them.

Joanna Mortreux’s oil painting
Melbourne artist Joanna Mortreux’s oil painting, Looking Back Undoes Everything, is peopled with otherworldly anthropomorphic creatures in various states of flight. Inspired by illustrated encyclopedias of animals, these strange life forms possess a dynamic duality that captures the tension between evolution and de-evolution. LINK
