Ciudad Nazca - english documentation video

http://ciudadnazca.net/ "Nazca City" is a land art project, the drawing of a true scale map of an imaginary city onto the surface of the Peruvian desert. To do this we built a robot which moves autonomously, plowing the ground to uncover its underlying color. Because of its scale, the map can only be appreciated as a whole from certain a height by means of airplains or satellite imaging. The project is inspired by the gigantic figures drawn onto the desert by the ancient Nazca culture (200 BC - 600 AD), which can still be seen today. It invites to reflect upon the explosive urbanization of the deserts of the Peruvian coast, taking place since the middle of the last century, and its consequences on environmental sustainability and the quality of living. Master Builder Makes Legos Bend To His Will In Ohio Stadium Replica

Opened in 1922 and currently able to handle more 100,000 fans, Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, is a sight to behold. It's almost as amazing as the Lego replica sitting in Paul Janssen's basement.

The 42-year-old Ohio State University professor tells NPR's Robert Siegel on All Things Considered what it was like to build the horseshoe-shaped stadium out of 1 million Lego pieces. Built at a scale of 1:120, it took years of planning, collecting pieces and building to complete the project.

The mini-stadium can seat only 6,000 Lego people — that's thanks to issues of scale, not Janssen's work.

You can see the results for yourself in the photos below, and in a full photo gallery over at The Columbus Dispatch.

There is also audio on this story at the LINK.

Daihai Fei graduated from college six months ago and needed a place to live in Beijing. But the rental properties available were so expensive that he decided to build his own house. It’s shaped like an egg and made from burlap bags, bamboo, insulation, and paint. Fei built a solar panel into the roof. The total cost was 6400 yuan or $960 USD. You can view several more pictures at the link, which appears to be in Italian.

Ark Hotel Construction time lapse building 15 storeys in 2 days

Level 9 Earthquake Resistance: diagonal bracing structure, light weight,
steel construction, passed level 9 earthquake resistance testing
6x Less Material: even though the construction materials are much
lighter(250kg/m2) than the traditional materials(over 1500kg/m2), the floors
and walls are solid with surefootedness, airtight and sound-proofing
5x Energy Efficient: 150mm thermal insulation for walls and roofs, triple
glazed plastic windows, external solar shading, heat insulation, fresh
air heat recovery, LED lighting, yearly HAVC A/C energy consumption
equivalent to 7 liters oil.
20x Purification: after 3 levels of purification, the purification efficiency
for fresh air reaches 95%-99.9%; air exchanged 1-2.5 times per hour, and
indoor air is 20x cleaner than out door air
1% Construction Waste: all components are factory made, construction
waste, mainly package materials, result from on site set-up only and
amount to 1% of the total weight of the building.
This is the first building in human history which combines almost all

World’s Most Expensive House Built

India’s richest man, and Forbes’s fourth richest man, Mukesh Ambani, has built the world’s most expensive house in Mumbai. It is estimated to be worth $1 billion. The lavish building– named Antilia, after the mythical island– has 27 stories, is 567-feet high and has 37,000 square meters of floor space — more than the Palace of Versailles. It contains a health club with a gym and dance studio, at least one swimming pool, a ballroom, guestrooms, a variety of lounges and a 50-seater cinema. There are three helicopter pads on the roof and a car park for 160 vehicles on the ground floors. It’s obviously quite a job keeping all this running smoothly, so the house, if you can call it that, also boasts a staff of 600. And all this for just Ambani, his wife and their three children to enjoy.” LINK

Roger Mayer, guitar effects maker for Hendrix, Page, Beck

Roger Mayer was an acoustic engineer for the British Navy who in the late 1960s, through his pal Jimmy Page, became the go-to electronic effects whiz for Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, and a bunch of other innovative musicians. For Hendrix, he built the Octavia, a pedal that doubled the input pitch an octave higher or lower and, natch, added fuzz. I love the 1968 photo above of Mayer with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Mayer is still in the game, making and selling guitar effects pedals Via: his site here. And for an interview with Mayer, check out the video below.

Roger Mayer is the electrical engineer who developed several electric guitar effects, most notably the Octavia, an effects pedal which reproduced the input signal one octave higher, and mixes the two sounds with some added fuzz. The effect was popularized by Jimi Hendrix, and can be heard during the solos on the song "Purple Haze". LINK, Via: Youtube

Krupp Digging Machine - World's Largest Digging Machine

Taking over five years to design and manufacture along with $100 million, the Krupp Digging Machine is the largest trenching machine in the world. This amazing machine is 700 ft long and weighs over 45,000 tons. Take a look at more of the world’s largest machines at Oddee: Link, Via: Neatorama

This is the largest digging machine (or trencher or rotating shovel) in the world. It was built by Krupp and is shown here crossing a road in Germany on the way to its destination, an open air coal mine. Although at the mine the treads are unnecessary, it was cheaper to make the machine self-propelled than to try and move it with conventional hauling equipment.

Some factoids:

The machine is 95 meters high and 215 meters long (almost 2.5 football fields in length)
Weight is 45,500 tons (that's equivalent to a bumper to bumper line of jeeps 80 miles long)
It took 5 years to design and manufacture at a cost of $100 million
Maximum digging speed is 10 meters per minute
Can move more than 76,000 cubic meters of coal, rock, and earth per day.

Man in Kenya Builds Airplane from Scrap

(Video Link)
Gabriel Nderitu, an IT professional in Kenya, is almost finished making his homemade airplane. He researched the design online and built it out of spare parts:

In the end, Nderitu mounted a Toyota engine to his modular airframe. The strutted wing and ailerons are skinned with aluminum sheet. The engine itself turns up to 4,000 rpm, driving a 74-inch wooden propeller through a simple reduction belt drive.

Nderitu plans to make his first flight soon.
