http://ciudadnazca.net/ "Nazca City" is a land art project, the drawing of a true scale map of an imaginary city onto the surface of the Peruvian desert. To do this we built a robot which moves autonomously, plowing the ground to uncover its underlying color. Because of its scale, the map can only be appreciated as a whole from certain a height by means of airplains or satellite imaging.
The project is inspired by the gigantic figures drawn onto the desert by the ancient Nazca culture (200 BC - 600 AD), which can still be seen today. It invites to reflect upon the explosive urbanization of the deserts of the Peruvian coast, taking place since the middle of the last century, and its consequences on environmental sustainability and the quality of living. The Unbearable Beauty of the Night Sky
Take a DEEP BREATH before watching this ESOCast mashup with Dr. J. The Sun is setting behind Cerro Paranal in the Chilean Atacama desert. While astronomers get ready to observe with ESO's Very Large Telescope, Nature prepares for her own grand display. As night falls over the desert, the southern sky reveals its nocturnal beauty, leaving the spectator in silent amazement. Some people, however, don't just stare at the spectacle. With great skill, they record these unique moments for everyone to see - they are the photographers of the night.
Anyone who has been up at night in a remote, high place such as at one of ESO's observatories in Chile may have been lucky enough to experience the splendid view of the myriad stars shining brightly from the heavens. It is a both a dream and a challenge for a photographer to capture an image of this incredible view. Today we will focus on three ESO staff members, who, during their free time, produce outstanding astrophotography. By publishing their results on the internet they share their enthusiasm for the astonishing wonders of the southern skies with a wider audience.
Yuri Beletsky is an ESO Fellow and astronomer at the Paranal Observatory.
When not observing with the world's most advanced telescope, the VLT, he actively lives out his passion for taking pictures of the southern sky.
"I like the night sky, I like stars and the night sky is so beautiful, you can see millions of stars and astrophotography is the best way to show the people what actually stars are, so taking this picture I share my passion with people and I am showing the sky then."

Sade - Soldier of Love
British soul band Sade—yep, “Smooth Operator” Sade is a band—is back from a ten-year hiatus with the video for “Soldier of Love,” the first single from their upcoming album of the same name. What has lead singer Sade Adu been doing for the last decade? Perhaps traveling coast-to-coast, L.A. to Chicago on foot? Who knows, but as you can see from the moody video below, she hasn’t lost any of her enigmatic aura.
“Soldier of Love” is a laid-back R&B jam dolled up with some Ennio Morricone flourishes, and appropriately enough the video is set in the desert, or as she calls it here, “the hinterland of my devotion.” Dressed like Trinity from The Matrix and doing some lasso work George Bailey would be jealous of, Sade performs against a backdrop of barren red desert and menacingly cloudy skies. (Maybe she’s a fan of Dune, too.) Accompanying her is a troupe of backup dancers doing things desert soldiers want to do, like military-march-styled dance moves and synchronized push-ups. Coachella Time-Lapse: Everything Happening at the Same Time (dir. Ray Klein, music by Hawke)

Abandoned Missile Launch Site
This is an Abandoned Missile Launch Site. What it differs from other of such kind is that it has launched really big rockets that traveled to orbit, and what else - it was not destroyed like all the other sites left by Soviet army but is left untouched in the desert of Kazakhstan for anyone to visit. 20 Most Incredible Desert Oases
An oasis is a fertile tract of land that occurs in a desert wherever a permanent supply of fresh water is available. Oases vary in size from about 2.5 acres around small springs to vast areas of naturally watered or irrigated land.
Underground water sources account for most oases; their springs and wells are supplied from sandstone aquifers whose intake areas may be more than 500 miles away. LINK: Presurfer

Monk building meditation center in California desert
Buddhist monk THich Dang "Tom" Phap is building a beautiful Buddhist Meditation Center in a very unusual and unlikely location: the barren high desert of Adelanto, California. The centerpiece is a 60-ton marble statue of the saint Quan yin, donated by a Malaysian businessman. Phap bought 15 acres in Adelanto four years ago as a home for the statue and the center that he hopes he can complete if enough donations come in. Right now, the place has no power or water. The Los Angeles Times created a lovely short video visit with Phap to accompany an article on his project. Link to video, Link to article. Via: Boingboing

The Sahara is technically the world’s second largest desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 square kilometres (3,500,000 sq mi), it covers most parts of northern Africa; an area stretching from the Red sea, including parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outskirts of the Atlantic ocean. The Sahara desert covers huge parts of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Sudan and Tunisia. In this picture I see Surreal Art made my nature.
