Takeshi Miyakawa: Candelier

Candelier', created by japanese-born, New York-based designer Takeshi Miyakawa, is a chandelier composed entirely out of wax, burning itself into nonexistence during normal use. Miyakawa conceptualized the work from his use of artist Nova Jiang's 'Creatomatic' software program. The application randomly juxtaposes images of two everyday objects, promoting free association and creativity: 'The 'Creatomatic' uses the technique of surprise to overcome habitual ways of thinking and short-circuit rational control.' Human Planet - Web exclusive series trailer - BBC One

Human Planet is an awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, heart-stopping landmark series that marvels at mankind's incredible relationship with nature in the world today.

Uniquely in the animal kingdom, humans have managed to adapt and thrive in every environment on Earth. Each episode takes you to the extremes of our planet: the arctic, mountains, oceans, jungles, grasslands, deserts, rivers and even the urban jungle. Here you will meet people who survive by building complex, exciting and often mutually beneficial relationships with their animal neighbours and the hostile elements of the natural world.

Human Planet crews have filmed in around 80 locations, bringing you many stories that have never been told on television before. The team has trekked with HD cameras and state of the art gear to film from the air, from the ground and underwater. The result: a "cinematic experience" created by world-class natural history and documentary camera crews and programme makers. LINK: Youtube

Julie Andrews and Johnny Carson Bloopers

Two early/mid 1970s bloopers, the first with Julie Andrews telling someone to "piss off", when something seems to have gone awry while filming a variety program of some sorts, followed by a Tonight Show commercial segment blooper with Johnny Carson and Ed Mcmahon. They're shilling for the Vicks Company, but they start to play with making profane names for a "women's feminine product" called "Dismiss". Johnny has some other more raunchier as he goes on suggestions for the name of the product. Funny, adult stuff and it's strange to hear the great Johnny use blue language! LINK: Youtube

Google & YouTube Present: Conan O'Brien

[YouTube - Link]

It may be long (nearly 50 minutes), but Conan’s recent appearance at Google was full of insight, hilarity, and general Conan-ness.

At one point (around 23:30) he leaves the stage to let an audience member touch his hair. This is shortly after his "impression of rapper Ludacris" after being asked about Jay Leno.

The program was hosted by Vic Gundotra, VP of Engineering, who allowed Conan to poke fun at him, Google, and anything else.

Flame Painting

Flame is a painting program. Everyone can be an artist with Flame and you can try it with different brush settings and paint your own flame paintings. When you change background from black to white, palette changes from additive to substactive and the feeling of the painting is very different. It's not easy to explain all brush parameters, so you have to figure that out yourself. LINK: The Presurfer

Here is an example (not mine) of what you can do with Flame.

Designer Steven Heller gives an overview and critique of Olympic pictograms used over the past 74 years for the New York Times. When you only see these every few years, you don’t realize how different they are for each Olympiad. -Via: The Presurfer, Via: Neatorama
