Scientists Take Pictures of Antarctic Mountain Range for the First Time

The Gamburtsev Mountains in Antarctica, named after Soviet geophysicist Grigoriy Gamburtsev, lie beneath a mile of solid ice. Scientists have known about their general location for a while, but only recently were able to take pictures of them:

The images are the result of radar technology, and reveal a dramatic landscape of rocky summits, deep river valleys, and liquid, not frozen, lakes, all hidden beneath the ice. The range itself rivals the Alps in size and cover an area that is roughly the size of New York State.

“What we’d shown before was an estimate based on gravity data — a little bit of a coarse resolution tool,” said Robin Bell, a senior research scientist at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. “What we showed at this meeting was the radar data. It’s like going from using a big, fat sharpie to using a fine-tipped pencil.”

The Teahouse at the Top of the World

Information about this place is still sketchy, but there appears to be a tea house in Anhui Province, China, that is only accessible after rappelling up a mountain. You can view amazing pictures of people ascending the mountain at the link.

Spiral staircase built around a 75' tree

A reader writes, "A man on Hornby Island, BC built a spiral staircase around a 75-foot cedar tree. He put a platform on the top to get a view of the ocean. This video shows what it's like to climb up and then down the staircase." LINK, Via: Youtube

The staircase has 99 stairs and goes up for about 75 feet (25 meters). He's built a platform at the top where you can sit and see mountains and the ocean.

Pebble toad's rock and roll life

When confronted by a predator, some animals fight, others run while a few hide, hoping not to be noticed.

By doing so, the tiny creature bounces down the rocks just like a rubber ball. The pebble toad of Venezuela does something altogether different: it curls up like a ball and throws itself down the side of a mountain. LINK
