Haile, The Interactive Robot Drummer

Gil Weinberg and Scott Driscoll of Georgia Tech developed a robot that can improvise rhythms as it hears music:

Haile is a robotic percussionist that can listen to live players, analyze their music in real-time, and use the product of this analysis to play back in an improvisational manner. It is designed to combine the benefits of computational power and algorithmic music with the richness, visual interactivity, and expression of acoustic playing. We believe that when collaborating with live players, Haile can facilitate a musical experience that is not possible by any other means, inspiring players to interact with it in novel expressive manners, which leads to novel musical outcome.

Hylozoic Soil: Interactive kinetic sculpture

Take, for example, Hylozoic Soil, an 8,000-cubic-foot thicket of acrylic, latex, and metal that trembles, grasps, and snaps at people who pass through it. The creator of this conceptual building material, Canadian artist and architect Philip Beesley, also designs respectable, less-aggressive public structures. VPlay from Microsoft Research

VPlay is an interactive system based on a Microsoft Surface that is being developed over at Microsoft Research Cambridge. In short, it allows one or multiple users to manipulate video in real time. VPlay is designed for VJing (live video mixing) and achieves the real-time aspect by using digital objects that represent video clips, effects, and mixers. Users can then use simple touch gestures to move them around and arrange them while looking at the resulting ever-changing video output. Arcade Fire Videos

Both are music videos (Black Mirror and Neon Bible from their Neon Bible album), but are completely interactive. And pretty amazing.

For Black Mirror, you can turn on and off the various song tracks as the music is playing, so you can hear what the song sounds like with, say, just piano and vocals. I’ve seen stuff like this before, but the implementation is really good.

For Neon Bible, you get to control the lead singer’s various movements as he sings the song. Granted it’s a limited set of movements, but I played through it twice and found a completely different set of actions from one time to the next. So for those of us who really like easter eggs, this site can keep you entertained for a good amount of time.

What’s great about both is that they are on a timeline. You have certain windows of opportunity to do something, and once they pass you’ve missed them. So it becomes like a game (unlike most easter-eggy experiences, where the environment is static and you have all the time you want to click away). A really great idea.
