POW veterans celebrated at VA luncheon

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- There are fewer than 30,000 POW veterans left in the United States, and about 50 of them were honored Monday at the VA Hospital in Amarillo. "These veterans have given in such a way to their country," VA Hospital Director Andrew Welch stated. "What they've done is they've stepped up for their country, gone to war, been captured during wartime and suffered in a POW camp and have made it back home. And we want to make sure that they know how much we appreciate them every single day." A report has shown that up to 2,800 of these POW veterans die each year, and soon none will be left. The VA Hospital hosts the luncheon twice a year to thank veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam for all they put on the line to ensure Americans could keep their freedom. "To preserve their memory before it's a memory...," Welch said. "In other words, to appreciate them right now while they can still hear us appreciating them and to let them know that we care about them, that we appreciate what they did for their country." The POWs hear it time and time again, but Welch said nothing can be done to completely thank the men for the services and sacrifices they provided. LINK

Willie Nelson Gets No Special Treatment

A country judge in Sierra Blanca, Texas, says Willie Nelson will not get special consideration in her court despite a country prosecutor's plan to have the singer perform a song as part of a plea deal on a marijuana charge.

The country icon was arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession in November when his tour bus was stopped by authorities at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, a West Texas community located near the border of Mexico.

Hudspeth County attorney Kit Bramblett's proposed plea bargain calls for Nelson to perform "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" in the courtroom and pay a small fine and court costs.

County judge Becky Dean-Walker seems to disagree. "Just because he's a star, I don't think he should receive any special treatment," she told the Big Bend Sentinel newspaper in Marfa, Texas. "I believe everybody should be treated the same."

Nelson, 77, has openly acknowledged his use of marijuana and serves as co-chairman of National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). LINK

GIANT SNAKE PICTURES: Alien Species Invading U.S.?

The world's heaviest snake, the green anaconda is one of nine huge alien snake species that may wreak havoc if they take hold in the United States, according to a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report released this week. (Read full story: "Alien Giant Snakes Threaten to Invade Up to 1/3 of U.S.")

The giant snake (pictured in the Peruvian Amazon) can reach lengths of 23 feet (7 meters) and weigh in at 550 pounds (227 kilograms). The olive-green reptiles would flourish in the Florida Peninsula and in southern Texas, regions that have climates similar to the anaconda's native South American habitat, the study authors say. Jaguarundi

The Texas jaguarundi is a small endangered wildcat that lives along the border between Texas and Mexico. The jaguarundi was put on the federal endangered species list in 1976, but the Department of the Interior has never formulated a plan to protect the cat, as required under the Endangered Species Act.
