Ciudad Nazca - english documentation video
http://ciudadnazca.net/ "Nazca City" is a land art project, the drawing of a true scale map of an imaginary city onto the surface of the Peruvian desert. To do this we built a robot which moves autonomously, plowing the ground to uncover its underlying color. Because of its scale, the map can only be appreciated as a whole from certain a height by means of airplains or satellite imaging.
The project is inspired by the gigantic figures drawn onto the desert by the ancient Nazca culture (200 BC - 600 AD), which can still be seen today. It invites to reflect upon the explosive urbanization of the deserts of the Peruvian coast, taking place since the middle of the last century, and its consequences on environmental sustainability and the quality of living. Chinese artist Yin Xiuzhen created a series of artworks called “Portable Cities“, which start with the used clothing of a city’s inhabitants and are remade as three-dimensional textile models of their places of origin, sprouting organically from suitcases. LINK

Ani, Ghost City of 1001 Churches

Ani is an abandoned city in Turkey near the Armenian border. At one time it had 200,000 residents, but no one has lived there for 300 years. Huge empty ancient buildings remain, all alone in their magnificence. The history of this city is long and bloody, and the remaining archaeological site is in danger of disappearing completely. Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht
YouTube link.
Time lapse video from the fourth largest city in the Netherlands.
This is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at around 8.30 am. Original time was 8 minutes that were compressed into 2 minutes, so everything is 4 times faster than in reality. The sound is original.
This is one of the busiest junctions in Utrecht a city with a population of 300,000. No less than 18,000 bicycles and 2,500 buses pass here every day. And yet Google Street View missed it. Because private motorized traffic is restricted here.
These cyclists cross a one way bus lane (also used by taxis and municipal vehicles), two light rail tracks and then a one way street that can be used by private vehicles.
Commentary at the link addresses the absence of helmets on the cyclists.

Sky from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
Best to view this HD time lapse in full screen. Filmmaker Philip Bloom shot this in Dubai over five days and nights, capturing the luminous grandeur of the city; music is “Xibalba” from The Fountain by Clint Mansell.

Count Basie Paints A Picture Of The Birth Of The Blues
Count Basie reminisces on Kansas City and the birth of the Blues. He performs an affectionate tribute to his mentor, Fats Waller. (Excerpt from Jazz Casual 07/21/68).
It's strange how simple, off-the-cuff stuff can be so beautiful, it makes you cry.
Here's Count Basie on the Jazz Casual TV program from 1968. Basie paints a picture of Kansas City and Harlem in the golden age, then dispels it with a laugh like the smoke from his cigarette. "So, uh... Where were we?" LINK: Boingboing, Via: Youtube

Crystal Island

Not to be outdone by Kuala Lumpur or Taipei, Moscow is soon to be home to the largest building ever built. British architect Sir Norman Foster has designed a 1500-foot-tall, 27-million-square-foot behemoth of a structure (a ‘city within a building’) called The Crystal Island, set to be completed within the next five years at the cost of $4 billion. The building will house 900 apartments, 3000 hotel rooms, an international school, a sporting complex, and much more. Foster + Partners has also incorporated sustainable design features into the building such as solar panels and wind turbines for power, atriums for ventilation, and special enclosure panels to regulate internal climate, which, judging by the projects’ size, will be sorely needed. Forbidden City - Beijing China
Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, called Gu Gong in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the world's largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park. The distance between these two gates is 960 meters, while the distance between the gates in the east and west walls is 750 meters. There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside. The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. LINK
