Every Easter in Stratford, Ontario you can see the swans returning to the Avon River in style. They are escorted from their winter quarters in a fenced area to the water by a parade of bagpipers! The Zenith wheelchair, a design by the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, is fit with tank-like treads to climb up stairs under the user's own power.
The treaded design combines with strong, lightweight tech like an aluminum back frame and a Herman Miller-inspired carbon fiber seat to create a beastly machine that's not too cumbersome to actually wield. Still, if the design actually works—there's no working prototype yet—we have to wonder: Why didn't everyone put tank treads on wheelchairs already? The final day of the Winter Olympics this Sunday has only two events: the gold medal men’s hockey game and the 50km cross-country skiing race. Brian McKeever will be skiing for Canada. This race will make him the first Olympian ever to participate in both the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the same year. McKeever is legally blind.
In 1998, McKeever was a promising 19-year-old skier when he was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease, a type of juvenile macular degeneration that gradually leads to blindness. Twelve years later, McKeever only has 10 percent of his vision, and that tiny fraction is in his peripheral vision.
Rather than rolling over when he lost his sight, though, McKeever got back on his skis.

No, that's not a hairy branch but rather an astounding kind of ice formation called "hair ice" ("haareis" in German). Illinois State University professor James Carter of the Geography-Geology Department, created a page about this natural wonder that includes many photos of these marvelous ice growths, sometimes called "silk frost" or "cotton candy frost."The photo above is by Rick Eppler of Vancouver Island, Canada. While the term frost is used frequently as part of such names, these ice formations are not a product of frost. Frost comes about by moisture from the air being deposited on surfaces. As such frost is quite amorphous and would never appear as fine needles like we see here. Hair Ice is ice that grows outward from the surface of the wood, as super-cooled water emerges from the wood, freezes and adds to the hairs from the base.

Burnaby artist Bill Thomson, places his ‘Recycling Eagle’ sculpture at the new Vancouver Convention Centre building. Bill’s ‘Recycling Eagle’ is one of over 150 ‘Eagles in the City’ to be located in towns around the province from April 2009 to April 2010. The project is sponsored by the BC Lions Society.
The artist states: ‘Recycling Eagle’, is a urban eagle with a sharp eye for salvage and a popular culture flair for ‘bling’. The silvery wings are embellished with the shiny backs of recycled license plates along with a built in LED light system on the trailing edge of the wings. Check out Thomson’s unique ‘Recycling Eagle’, on your next visit to the waterfront. LINK
Mural Mosaic is a project at the Town of Cochrane, Canada, where hundreds of original paintings by artists are combined into a giant mural.
The idea for the project came from artist Lewis Lavoie, who created the first Mural Mosaic by assembling scores of his own personal paintings into the face of Michelangelo’s David (previously on Neatorama here). Since then, he has created the master image and designate panels to individual artists (with some color and shape guidelines - but the artists are free to create as they desire).
This one above is their latest, "Le Cadeau du Cheval / The Horse Gift" (2008), which is composed of individual paintings of famous horses.
