THE 4×4 HELICOPTER
“This helicopter that changes Transformers-like into a rugged 4×4 may one day be ferrying troops around Iraq and Afghanistan, helping them avoid the constant threat of roadside bombs. The futuristic design is the latest brainchild of the Texas-based AVX Aircraft Company. It can carry four fully-equipped soldiers and travel 250 miles by land and air on a single tank of fuel. The company says that almost any soldier could drive and fly it, and that they would not need a pilot’s license. Unfolding the rotor blades for flight should convert the vehicle from 4×4 to aircraft in just one minute. The company says the vehicle would be especially suitable for use in Iraq and Afghanistan where troops face constant danger from roadside bombs, or IED – improvised explosive devices. The Pentagon is now considering the design.” w/ photos. LINK

Sweet Little Quadrocopter
(You Tube link)
We don’t know whether we should be terrified or overjoyed. We’ve just come across a video demo from the University of Pennsylvania’s GRASP Lab that shows an autonomous quadrotor helicopter performing “precise aggressive maneuvers.” And trust us when we say, nothing in the foregoing sentence is an overstatement — the thing moves with the speed and grace of an angry bee, while accompanied by the perfectly menacing whine of its little engine.
This little helicopter would make an excellent cartoon character.

High Wire Acts: A new way to maintain power lines
You need insulated gonads of steel to get into a harness and let a helicopter fly you into a high voltage cable to service them. That's precisely what the technicians from Air2 do for utilities companies nationwide. [Air2 Via: Flightglobal], Via: Gizmodo

Video of NASA dropping helicopter to watch it crash
( Video Link: Youtube )
The second crash test of a small lightweight helicopter at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., was a smashing success, literally -- just as engineers had predicted.
The helicopter smacked hard into the concrete. Its skid gear collapsed, its windscreen cracked open and its occupants lurched forward violently, suffering potentially spine-crushing injuries according to internal data recorders. The crash test was all in the name of research to try to make helicopters safer.

Motorized Lego Technic Avatar Helicopter is Grounded—For Now
Give this Lego Avatar helicopter a few aerodynamic tweaks, a slightly more powerful engine and a pilot spouting off canned, predictable dialogue, and I could easily see it taking flight, literally, to fight the Na'Vi.
Scale model of the Battle Helicopter form James Cameron's Avatar.
Made for a LEGO building competition.
Looks pretty sturdy too, which is incredibly important should the pilot happen to have a James Cameron-sized ego. [Nowhere Else, Via: CrunchGear], Via: Gizmodo, Via: Youtube

The Largest Helicopter Ever Built
The Russian Mil V-12 was by far largest helicopter ever built. It was developed in the Soviet Union during the 1960s.
The V-12 featured two rotors mounted side by side at the ends of a large wing. Each rotor had a diameter of nearly 115 ft. The helicopter was so enormous that the distance from the edge of one rotor disk to the other was almost 220 ft, even wider across than the wingspan of a Boeing 747.

Photos by Yann Arthus Bertrand
Yann Arthus-Bertrand was born on March 13, 1946 in Paris and is a photographer, journalist, reporter, businessman and environmentalist.
In 1994, under the sponsorship of UNESCO, Yann Arthus Bertrand undertook a substantive work on the state of the planet by offering to take photos of the most beautiful landscapes in the world seen from an helicopter. The project, called "Earth from heaven", with the credo: "Witnessing the beauty of the world and try to protect the Earth" this will give birth to the book Terre vue du Ciel which sold more than 3 million in 24 languages.
On 1 July 2005, Yann Arthus Bertrand founded the International Association of ecologist, "GoodPlanet" and implements "Action Carbone", a program to reduce the greenhouse gases generated by its own aerial photographs. This action supports projects on renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation.
