World’s Largest Mud-Brick Building

“The walls of the Great Mosque are made of sun-baked mud bricks called ferey, a mud based mortar, and are coated with a mud plaster which gives the building its smooth, sculpted look. The walls are between 16 in. and 24 in. thick – the thickness varying with the wall’s height. Bundles of palm branches were included in the building to reduce cracking caused by frequent drastic changes in humidity and temperature and to serve as readymade scaffolding for annual repairs. The walls insulate the building from heat during the day and by nightfall have absorbed enough heat to keep the mosque warm through the night. Gutters, made of ceramic pipes, extend from the roofline and direct water drainage from the roof away from the walls. To protect the Great Mosque from water damage, in particular flooding by the Bani river, the entire structure was constructed on a raised platform 3 meters high. A set of six stairs, each decorated with pinnacles, leads to the mosque’s entrance.” w/ photos. LINK

Sunflower star has weird way of eating

A sunflower star can have up to 26 arms and 15,000 tube feet, which it can use to pry open a clam. The sunflower star then pushes its stomach out of its mouth and into the clam, digesting the hapless bivalve in its own shell.

The sunflower star is the largest sea star in the world. It's also one of the fastest animals on the ocean bottom, crawling one metre... a minute, which may not seem that fast to us but is speedy if you're a clam just chillin' on the sand.

The Grand Rapids LipDub (NEW WORLD RECORD)

"The Grand Rapids LipDub Video was filmed May 22nd, with 5,000 people, and involved a major shutdown of downtown Grand Rapids, which was filled with marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire, and helicopter take offs. It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date.

This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a "dying city." We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean's "American Pie," a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope." - Rob Bliss, Director & Executive Producer.

Krupp Digging Machine - World's Largest Digging Machine

Taking over five years to design and manufacture along with $100 million, the Krupp Digging Machine is the largest trenching machine in the world. This amazing machine is 700 ft long and weighs over 45,000 tons. Take a look at more of the world’s largest machines at Oddee: Link, Via: Neatorama

This is the largest digging machine (or trencher or rotating shovel) in the world. It was built by Krupp and is shown here crossing a road in Germany on the way to its destination, an open air coal mine. Although at the mine the treads are unnecessary, it was cheaper to make the machine self-propelled than to try and move it with conventional hauling equipment.

Some factoids:

The machine is 95 meters high and 215 meters long (almost 2.5 football fields in length)
Weight is 45,500 tons (that's equivalent to a bumper to bumper line of jeeps 80 miles long)
It took 5 years to design and manufacture at a cost of $100 million
Maximum digging speed is 10 meters per minute
Can move more than 76,000 cubic meters of coal, rock, and earth per day.

A wistaria vine in Sierra Madre, California has been named as the World’s Largest Flowering Plant by the Guinness Book of World Records. This vine is so big it has its own festival! William and Alice Brugman planted it in 1894 to celebrate the purchase of their new home. Klencke Atlas - The Largest Book in the World

The British Library has announced that the Klencke Atlas will have its first-ever public showing this summer as part of a map exhibition.

It is almost absurdly huge – 1.75 metres (5ft) tall and 1.9 metres (6ft) wide – and was given to [Charles II] by Dutch merchants and placed in his cabinet of curiosities.

At the time of its creation, it was intended as “an encyclopaedic summary of the world.” LINK: Neatorama

The Largest Pickup Truck in the World

(YouTube Link)

In the 1990s, Seikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates decided to build a giant pickup truck. The result was a truck modeled on the 1950s era Dodge Power Wagon (apparently an iconic vehicle in his country) precisely 64 times larger than the original. It contains a full suite of rooms and can actually drive. The video clip above is from Jeremy Clarkson’s BBC documentary series Motorworld.

The Largest Helicopter Ever Built

The Russian Mil V-12 was by far largest helicopter ever built. It was developed in the Soviet Union during the 1960s.

The V-12 featured two rotors mounted side by side at the ends of a large wing. Each rotor had a diameter of nearly 115 ft. The helicopter was so enormous that the distance from the edge of one rotor disk to the other was almost 220 ft, even wider across than the wingspan of a Boeing 747.
