Australia's monster motorbike from hell
Proving once again that it is always easier to tear things apart than it is to build them is the Australian monster, as seen above. The builder, Ray Baumann, says that "this is a way of taking a bit more care," if you can believe that. You see, his previous job was as a stunt driver. He claims that it is much safer riding this monster bike crushing cars than it was to jump them on a much smaller machine. Weighing in at 13 tons and standing about 10 feet tall, the monster doesn't appear to have any suspension travel at all. The frame appears to be an upside-down ladder design, with wheels and tires from Caterpillar. What does it take to move this maxi-machine? A Detroit Diesel engine hooked to a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission. LINK

Historically Strange
Historically Strange:
When Germany conquered Tanganyika (a region of eastern Africa) in 1898, Chief Mkwawa, the leader of the Wahehe tribe, was killed. The Germans then sent Mkwawa’s head to Germany, where it was displayed in a museum in Bremen.
During World War I, the British kicked the Germans out of Africa, aided by the Wahehe. H.A. Byatt, the British administrator now overseeing the former German-controlled area, lobbied the British government for the return of Mkwawa’s skull in appreciation for the Wahehes’ War effort. The return of the skull was even stipulated in the Treaty of Versailles, the 1919 agreement outlining terms of German’s surrender. But Germany denied taking Mkwawa’s head and the British government didn’t push the issue, accepting the German explanation that the skull was lost.
In 1953 Sir Edward Twining, the British governor of Tanganyika, vowed to track down the skull … and found it in the Bremen Museum among a collection of dozens of skulls taken in the 1890s. Mkwawa’s skull was finally returned to the Wahehe in July 1954 and now resides in a museum there. LINK

The Panopticons
The Panopticons are a set of four futuristic sculptures set in the rural settings of Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale districts of East Lancashire, England. The powers-that-be commissioned the sculptures as gateway pieces and a symbol of the renaissance of the area.
Whatever the reason, the results are some fantastic works of art: LINK

Fantastic Ice Cathedral Grotto Under Norway’s Glacier
Melting ice has created a fantastic "ice cathedral" in a grotto under the Nigard Glacier, one of Norway’s major glaciers:
The ice grotto is "fantastic," with "extremely blue" colors and large icicles hanging from its ceiling. "But it’s changing from day to day."
The grotto is believed to have been created by rising temperatures. "It’s the running water under the ice that has made the ice over it melt." LINK

Fantastic Mr Frost
Sometimes nature's palette is richer than that of any artist, as these beautiful and surreal images show.
These delicate fronds and whorls are not decorative etchings, nor have they anything to do with vegetation, despite their biological appearance.
n fact they are nothing more than frozen water — ice crystals which formed on Mail reader Stuart Dent's cars on two frosty nights earlier this month outside his home in Oxfordshire.
The beautiful patterns, called "fern frost", reflect myriad water molecules arranged in six-sided patterns, a deep symmetry governed by the geometry of the molecule itself. LINK

Artist creates 20ft figure out of rock without using a Hammer or Chisel
An artist has spent three years scouring the globe for individual rocks which resemble body parts - to make a remarkable 2.5-tonne sculpture of the human form.
Duncan Elliott, 43, hauled stones ranging from the size of marbles up to 90kg from fields and mountains across Europe.
Each rock he used was precisely the right form - and proportionally the right size - for the body part it represents and has not been chipped or shaped.
Examples of where the rocks came from:
•Fingernails - beaches of Panormo, north coast of Crete
•Left thigh - a churchyard in Bristol
•Parts of the wings - hillside on the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire and cliff tops in Paxos, Ionian Greece
•Parts of the ribs - foot of cliffs on Barafundle Bay beach, Pembrokeshire
•Ankle fibula - by a roadside near Rodopos, north coast of Crete
•Part of thigh - fields near Ashbourne, Derbyshire
•Part of foot - Black Mountains near Mazamet, Southern France
•Parts of face - hillside outcrop near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire and mountains of Halki, Aegean Greece
•Parts of lower leg - on open ground near Lydford Gorge, Devon
•Biceps - Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

Troika’s Digital Cloud
This is a “digital sculpture,” called Cloud. It was commissioned by British Airways for their new luxury lounges in Heathrow Airport in London, and was constructed by the Troika art and design studio. Cloud is 5 meters long and is covered with 4,638 of those little flip dot things that you still occasionally see in train station displays. The dots flip back and forth between black and reflective silver, creating both visual patterns and a nifty rain stick sound. LINK, Via: Youtube

A Girl from Namibia Who Has a Special Bond with Animals
In 1990, Tippi Degré – daughter of Alain Degré and Sylvie Robert, a couple who chose to relinquish their lives in France for the freedom of nature in Southern Africa – was born in the newly independent Namibia. Her parents worked as freelance wildlife photographers and film makers. At 10 months the toddler was exploring the Namibian bush and desert.
For 10 years, Tippi wandered the bush bare footed, making friends with all sorts of animals: leopards, caracals, mongooses, baboons and snakes.
Her playground was the hills and the harsh desert tribe lands of southern Africa; as the family wandered the bush land, Tippi picked up all kinds of friends – like Abu, a five ton (28-year-old) elephant she calls “her brother”.
She would ride to a water hole on top of Abu and splash with the elephants of the herd, cuddle giant bullfrogs, lion cubs or meerkats; and became a grasshopper hunting specialist with the chameleons she was so fond of.
Tippi also befriended the Himba tribes people and the Bushmen of the Kalahari, who taught her how to survive on roots and berries and hence gave her practical experience of real life in the bush.
Life as a bush baby came to an end after her last year of "freedom" in Madagascar when Tippi moved to the French capital with her mother six years ago. But both in fact and in her heart, she remained an African. LINK, video next.

Meet Van Moth, the artist who paints with bugs
He is the artist who paints without putting brush to canvas.
Instead, Steven Kutcher uses moths, beetles, spiders, flies, honey bees, butterflies, grasshoppers - and even Hissing Cockroaches from Madagascar.
He dips the insects in paint, places them on a blank canvas and lets their movement create a string of colorful paintings.
The artist, who lives in Los Angeles, is a keen environmentalist and says he ensures his paint-soaked insects are unharmed.
He said: "I use water-based, nontoxic gouache paints which easily wash off. I have to take good care of them. After all, they are artists."
Mr Kutcher's bug art grew out of his work as an insect-handler for Hollywood films, including Spider-Man - he helped paint the tiny red and-blue spider that took a bite out of star Tobey Maguire and turned him into the superhero.
The artist's interest in insects began on childhood summer holidays in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where he collected fireflies. LINK

Nobuo Takahashi"s Animated Landscapes
“Musashino Plateau” and “Japan” — a pair of 3D computer animations directed by Nobuo Takahashi — illustrate (in dramatic fashion) how Japan’s landscape changed during the postwar period of rapid economic growth. The animations begin slowly with the early postwar recovery years, but the pace quickens to a frenzy as explosive growth during the bubble years (late ’80s/early ’90s) transforms the cityscape into a chaotic, tightly packed jumble of single-family homes, large apartment complexes and high-rise buildings. In the end, development grinds to a halt with the collapse of the bubble. LINK
