Return Of The Wandering Warblers
Each Spring the woodlands of America resound to the birdsong of returning visitors. Warblers - fifty three species of them all in all - arrive and right now is the best time to see them as they migrate.
Their arrival heralds a dazzling dash of color as the greenness of American forests is peppered as if with the ravishing hues of thousands of tiny precious stones. LINK: The Presurfer

Swan Parade
(YouTube link)
Every Easter in Stratford, Ontario you can see the swans returning to the Avon River in style. They are escorted from their winter quarters in a fenced area to the water by a parade of bagpipers! The Stratford Police Services pipe band wore kilts and marched to the river while playing music. The swans waddled behind. Link -Via: Arbroath, Via: Neatorama

The Hooded Pitohui - a Poisonous Bird
YouTube link
Jack Dumbacher, an ornithologist at the California Academy of Science, describes the discovery of and studies of a neurotoxin produced by this bird from New Guinea. The batrachotoxin that the bird produces is a sodium-channel blocker that is chemically identical to the neurotoxin used by poison dart frogs, and it is potentially lethal in higher doses. One assumes that this evolved as a deterrent to predation, so it’s interesting that like monarchs and other toxic butterflies, this bird exhibits a strikingly bright warning coloration. Chook the Lyrebird
(YouTube link)
You might recall Sir David Attenborough introducing us to the lyrebird, a master of mimcry (and later the wonderful remix). Chook the lyrebird lives at the Adelaide Zoo. After a period of construction at the zoo, Chook was able to recreate the sounds of hammers, saws, and power tools exactly. Link, -Via: Arbroath, Via: Neatorama

Wormdance
YouTube link.
The video documents a seagull “dancing” to bring earthworms to the surface. When humans do this, it’s called “worm-charming” or “worm-grunting.” Wood turtles also use this technique, by repeatedly bumping their carapace against the ground.

The Happy Feet of the Blue Footed Booby
There is no creature on earth quite like the Blue Footed Booby - at least when it comes to looking as if you have made a mistake when painting your walls that lovely light blue. Another native of the Galapagos, the BFB (as it perhaps should be known) is known too for its elaborate dancing. Lauren Axelrod
takes a look at this remarkable bird.

Two-inch gap at 35mph?
She didn’t have to swerve, or even apply the brakes. With just a flap and a twist this swallow swooped through a two-inch gap in a locked barn door.
She managed to maneuver all 14 inches worth of wingspan inside without ruffling a feather.
The astonishing display of aerobatics was captured by a photographer sitting in the agricultural shed.
Wildlife photographer Keith Ringland, who took the pictures, said: ‘The swallow used a different, much bigger hole in the roof to leave the building. LINK

Gigantic Spider Gobbles Bird in Front of Camera
Snapped in the backyard of a resident of Queensland, Australia in October 2008, the disturbing sequence shows the bird, identified as a chestnut-breeded mannikin, caught in the web of its arachnid nemesis. As the mannikin’s struggling subsides, the spider decides it’s feeding time and goes in for the kill. Golden orb weavers are known for their strong, finely meshed webs, but this one must have been like steel to keep the bird from taking wing. More info at LINK.
