World’s Biggest BBQ

The world’s biggest BBQ is now British. At over 16ft long, 4.9ft wide and 11.5ft tall this ‘God-grilla’ can cook over 1000 sausages or 500 burgers at the same time.

Jack Henriques, an engineer who runs the Bespoke BBQ Company, took three months to build this behemoth. The ‘God-grilla’ has seven coal trays attached to Jack’s trademark scissor-jack system, helping to raise and lower the grills without having to move the meat.

This bespoke barbecue can roast the inhabitants of a small farm in an afternoon. It can cook seven whole lambs, three pigs or two cows in any one sitting. So it’s perfect for performing it’s current job of catering for wedding and party guests at Cripps Barn in the Cotswolds. LINK: The World's Biggest

Sniper Sets World Distance Record With 8,120 Foot Kill - Diggnation Daily

It was silent but deadly. A British sniper set a world sharpshooting record by taking out two Taliban soldiers in Afghanistan from more than a mile and a half away. To put it into American terms, the distance was just about from the Statue of Liberty to Battery Park. Even crazier, a shot from that distance has no visible source and no audible shot. Blinded Soldier Now Able To 'See' With His Tongue

A British soldier blinded by a grenade in Iraq has described how his life has been transformed by ground-breaking technology that enables him to 'see' with his tongue. Lance Corporal Craig Lundberg from Liverpool can read words, identify shapes and walk unaided thanks to the BrainPort device, despite being totally blind.

The BrainPort converts visual images into a series of electrical pulses which are sent to the tongue. The different strength of the tingles can be read or interpreted so the user can mentally visualise their surroundings and navigate around objects.

Labrador Retriever Awarded Britain's Highest Military Honor

Treo, a nine-year old Black Labrador Retriever who served in the British Army, was awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. He’s repeatedly saved the lives of his comrades in Afghanistan:

Now he is being rewarded with the Dickin Medal – the animal equivalent of a Victoria Cross – the highest accolade for a military animal.[...]

Treo is the 63rd animal to receive the Dickin Medal – introduced in 1943 to honor the work of animals in war – and the 27th dog to receive the honor.

Since its introduction it has also been presented to 32 World War II messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat.

That one cat was Able Seacat Simon of the Royal Navy.

Fire engines too heavy for roads

Five fire engines in South Yorkshire and the Humber region have been sitting unused since they were bought in 2007.

Each Combined Aerial Rescue Pump (CARP) cost the fire services more than half a million pounds.

However, the vehicles have not yet been used because they are too heavy to be driven legally on British roads.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service blamed "a supplier's cock-up" for the situation.

It'll be on the BBC iPlayer, though I think only in the UK, sometime on Monday. LINK

Old British pubs

British people love their pubs and they’ll do anything to keep their closed circle of friends safe from intruders. Some would even design ugly signs and give their pubs crazy names to keep their beloved pubs to themselves. You can see some colorful and often bizarre pub signs featuring royalty, nobility, religious iconography, occupations and trades, legends and ever-popular sporting activities.

Iconic Album Art on Stamps

Stamp design by Studio Dempsey. LINK

The British Royal Mail service commissioned Studio Dempsey to create first class stamps with classic albums covers. The covers include albums from Blur, New Order, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Primal Scream, David Bowie, The Clash, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd, and Coldplay -but no Beatles.

The final selection of ten sleeves (which perhaps oddly doesn’t feature one of The Beatles’ album covers) will appear on a set of 10 stamps that will launch on January 7, 2010 – and the stamps will be uniquely shaped, as shown in these images, to accommodate a glimpse of a vinyl disc poking out of each record sleeve.

A Giant Version of Guitar Hero Played with Soccer Balls

This video is a promotional gimmick for the British rock band Kasabian. It begins with craftsmen creating enormous functional buttons on the wall of a London warehouse. These and additional visual effects make a giant version of the video game Guitar Hero. Participants play by kicking soccer balls at the buttons in the right order to the tune of one of Kasabian’s songs.

Oldest-ever British surveillance footage

Chris says, "Here's the latest issue of the journal Surveillance and Society, including an article that I wrote on the earliest use of film surveillance by British police, in 1935. Five minutes from the film itself is available through the Blip TV feed from that page, or through a link alongside the actual article. The other articles in the issue (notably Dietmar Kammerer's on the history of CCTV in Germany) are also worth a read, mind." LINK
