Flood volunteers begin filling sandbags



‘Sandbag Central’ is set to go for volunteers who start filling sandbags in Fargo Monday. Officials aim to have 3 million sandbags filled by March. To get there, they’ll have to work 8 hours a day. Sandbag stations can fill 5,000 bags an hour. LINK

The Sand Dollar - An Animal that can Clone Itself



The Sand dollar is well named – it looks like a coin after all. However, this denizen of the Pacific coast has a trick up its sleeve. It can clone itself.

Bizarre, but true. A few years ago scientists discovered that the larvae of the Sand dollar are able to clone themselves. When they were exposed to the mucus of their natural enemies – fish – they demonstrated a unique defense mechanism. They cloned themselves which meant more or less that they halved their size. It is thought that this new smaller size helps them to avoid detection by fish and so increase their survival chances.

Diego Stocco - Music From Sand





The entire track is created only out of tuned sand tones. No additional sounds or waveforms.
I emphasized the inner notes of the sand grains and mapped them on a sampler as a series of instruments. The grooves are all played live with various techniques, including taping two piezo films to my fingers. LINK

Making Glass in a Grill




All the components of glass can be found in two places: the beach and the laundry room. It’s possible to melt pure white-silica beach sand into glass, but only at temperatures of 3,000 to 3,500°F. Washing soda, lime or borax (a traditional laundry aid) added to the sand disrupts the quartz-crystal structure of silica and reduces the required temperature to a more practical, though still dangerous, 2,000°F, which I achieved with a backyard grill and a vacuum cleaner. Glass is thought to have been discovered around 7,000 years ago by Phoenician merchants when cooking fires were built over sand that, by chance, had some of these substances mixed in.
