Dolphin birth captured on camera in Hawaii

A dolphin has been filmed giving birth to a female calf in a Hawaii resort.
Footage of the birth shows the calf emerging from its mother tail first before immediately swimming off.
The birth occurred in a man-made lagoon at Dolphin Quest Hawaii, where visitors can swim with dolphins.
The dolphin calf will be monitored closely over the next 30 days as this is the most critical period for the new-born, Julie Rocho-Levine from Dolphin Quest Hawaii said.
The baby dolphin will be named when it is one month old, officials said.

Adorable baby octopuses, living happy and free

A Giant Pacific Octopus mates only once and when it has done so, it has already begun dying. The mother will lay her eggs in her den and stay there and never leave.. not even to eat.. once the eggs hatch, she is allowed to leave.. but only in spirit.. her body must stay behind as a reminder of her ultimate sacrifice. LINK: Vimeo

Note: This starts out somewhat depressingly, with the body of a female octopus that died after reproducing—as all octopuses, male and female, do. But it quickly gets past that, and on to the wee, baby octopuses, floating around the sea. Turn off the sound to block out the sad song, and focus on that.

What's a Takin?

A first for the L.A. Zoo is the birth of a female Sichuan takin, born on July 3, 2009!

Though takin may look like a combination of various animals: the snout of a moose, horns of a cow, tail of a bear, body of a buffalo and a mountain goat’s feet and agility, takins actually belong to a group of animals called goat-antelope. This group also includes domestic sheep and goats.

In China takin share a mountain habitat with the giant panda, which has proven beneficial for the takin’s preservation. Pandas are an “umbrella species,” which means that protecting panda habitats also safeguards the other animals that share their habitats. Like the panda, the takin is considered a treasure in its native land and is protected by the Chinese government. The newest addition to the Zoo’s takin herd is wandering the exhibit with its parents! LINK

Amazing pictures that capture the moment a Dolphin joins the World

It is one of the rarest and most magical sights in the natural world.
A bottle nose dolphin goes into labor . . . then a calf emerges, tail first. Mother guides baby gently to the surface, where they swim together for the first time.
Very few dolphin births have been captured on film in such astonishing detail. LINK
