RIP Florence Green, the Very Last World War I Veteran

In the past year, we brought you the obituaries of Frank Buckles, the last U.S. veteran of World War I and Claude Choules, the last surviving combat veteran of that war. Yesterday, the very last member of the military from the War to End All Wars passed away. Florence Green was only 17 years old when she signed up for the Women’s Royal Air Force in 1918. She worked at the military airfields in Norfolk. Mrs Green spent her war days working ”all hours” serving officers breakfast, lunch and dinner and would often spend time wandering the base simply ”admiring the pilots”. Before her death she said: ”I enjoyed my time in the WRAF. There were plenty of people at the airfields where I worked and they were all very good company. ”I would work every hour God sent but I had dozens of friends on the base and we had a great deal of fun in our spare time. In many ways I had the time of my life. ”I met dozens of pilots and would go on dates. I had the opportunity to go up in one of the planes but I was scared of flying. ”It was a lovely experience and I’m very proud.” Mrs. Green was a couple weeks short of 111 years old. It's even bigger than a blimp

The world's largest flying machine has touched down ever so gently in Eden Prairie.

The Farmers Airship, one of only two zeppelins in existence, arrived Tuesday at Flying Cloud Airport just before 7 p.m. The California-based airship, with its Farmers Insurance sponsorship clearly visible, is touring the country and offering opportunities for the public to buy rides starting Friday and through the weekend.

Though it looks like a blimp, a zeppelin differs in that it has an internal framework. It is filled with nonflammable helium and maneuvers similarly to a helicopter. Two lateral engines and one in the rear provide flight control and propulsion. It measures 246 feet long -- that's 15 feet longer than a Boeing 747and 50 feet longer than the world's largest blimp.

The airship left Milwaukee late Tuesday morning, crossed into Minnesota at Wabasha and then coasted to the Twin Cities from there. In a nod to its sponsor, the airship passed over the Farmers Insurance regional headquarters in Bloomington.

To track the zeppelin's travels online, visit www.airshipventures.com/tracking.php. According to the site, rides can range from $375 or more a person. LINK

Flying Car Gets Go-Ahead From US Air Authorities

The Terrafugia Transition, a light aircraft that can convert into a road-legal automobile, is to go into production after being given a special weight exemption by the US Federal Aviation Administration. The Transition was designed as a 'light sport' aircraft, the smallest kind of private aeroplane under FAA classification.

But the manufacturers found it impossible to fit the safety features that are required for road vehicles into that weight. Uniquely, however, the FAA has granted the Terrafugia Transition an exemption - allowing it to be classified as a light sport aircraft despite being 120lb over the limit. LINK: The Presurfer

Personal Flying Suit

Forget the Segway. Leave that jet pack behind. NASA is working on a personal flying suit. Conceptual designs for the experimental vehicle, called Puffin, were introduced at a meeting of the American Helicopter Society in San Francisco.

The Puffin is designed to be 12 feet in length, with a total wingspan of 14 and a half feet; it would weigh in at 300 pounds. The pilot would actually step into the suit, which has a cockpit-like area and helicopter-style blades, allowing for high-altitude flying. Of course, the Puffin is just a theory at the moment. It might be best used for covert military missions or rescue operations. LINK: The Presurfer

Praise to a Common Duck: Airborne Super Creatures

What's that thing flying at the cruising altitude of a modern jet? In a deadly cold, without air?
Common ducks routinely reach altitude of 5 to 6 kilometers (20,000 feet)

We see them all the time, rowing across a clear, blue sky, applauding into the air when we startle them, singing their sharp, sweet songs in the trees, spiraling, spinning over our heads … but when you take a bit of time and do a smidgen of research, you realize that birds are fascinating creatures, capable of some truly remarkable things. The Cutest Flying Animals On Earth

The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a marsupial native to the forests and rainforests of eastern and northern Australia, New Guinea, and the Bismarck Archipelago. It was introduced to Tasmania and about 15 years ago to the United States.

Not surprisingly, the sugar glider gets its name from the fact that it has a sweet tooth. Apart from leafs, insects and small vertebrates, this omnivore loves to feed on the sweet sap of certain species of eucalyptus, acacia and gum trees. LINK: Presurfer

Worlds First Flying Skycar Takes Off from London to Timbuktu

A group of daredevils set sail on the ultimate magical childhood dream adventure, traveling in a flying car for a 42 day journey from London to Timbuktu — a place that’s had a mystical, “middle of nowhere” reputation for decades. The ‘Parajet Skycar’ can change from ground to flying mode in a mere 3 minutes, and will make the epic 3,600-mile (5,800-kilometer) journey by both land and air.
The “world’s first road legal bio-fuelled flying car” is essentially a 1,000lb (480 kilo) dune buggy with a fan motor and paragliding wing attached. It can reach altitudes of up to 15,000 feet (4,570 meters), with a normal cruising height of 2,000 to 3,000 feet (600 to 900 meters), and a flight range of 185 miles (300 kilometers).

Skycar runs on the ground on a biofuel-powered 4-cylinder, 1,000cc engine, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds flat, has a top speed of 110 mph (180 km/h), with a range of 240 miles (306 kilometers), and an independent 4-wheel suspension to cope with the toughest terrain. LINK
